As a result of calcium ion binding, the calcium-dependent regulatory protein calmodulin (CaM) undergoes a conformational change, enabling it to bind to and activate a variety of enzymes. Metal-capped molecular hosts are unique in supramolecular chemistry, benefitting from the inner cavity's hydrophobic nature and the metal center's electrochemical properties. It is shown here that the paramagnetic properties of the metals in lanthanide-capped cyclodextrins (Ln-α-CDs and Ln-β-CDs) are a convenient NMR indicator for different populations of host-guest complexes in a given solution. The paramagnetic guest exchange saturation transfer (paraGEST) method was used to study the exchange dynamics in systems composed of Ln-α-CDs or Ln-β-CDs with fluorinated guests, revealing multiple co-existing populations of host-guest complexes exclusively in solutions containing Ln-β-CDs.

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of limited English proficiency (LEP) on neurocognitive profiles.

Method: Romanian (LEP-RO; = 59) and Arabic (LEP-AR; = 30) native speakers were compared to Canadian native speakers of English (NSE; = 24) on a strategically selected battery of neuropsychological tests.

Results: As predicted, participants with LEP demonstrated significantly lower performance on tests with high verbal mediation relative to US norms and the NSE sample (large effects).
