Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid nodules are common, and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is used to evaluate them, using either a long-axis or short-axis needle approach.
  • A study involving 245 thyroid nodules compared the effectiveness of these two methods in producing diagnostic results and found no significant difference in non-diagnostic rates between them (11.5% for long axis vs 16.3% for short axis).
  • Contrary to previous beliefs, this study suggests that the long axis approach does not yield better or more conclusive results than the short axis approach in FNAC for thyroid nodules.

Oral Kaposi Sarcoma (OKS) commonly occurs in patients with AIDS. The incidence of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is greatly increased in renal transplant recipients compared with the general population, with particular prevalence in certain ethnic groups where it can occur in up to 5% of transplant recipients. From them, only 2% can manifest first with OKS.

Objective: To evaluate whether thyroid nodule depth correlates with nondiagnostic results in ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytopathology.

Background: Many factors correlate with nondiagnostic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) results, including older age, macrocalcification, small-sized nodules, aspirin medication, and cystic portion in more than 50% of the thyroid nodules. However, there are few studies which have examined whether there is a relationship between the depth of nodules and the percentage of nondiagnostic results in cytology (Bethesda category I).

Background: Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC US) has been proven to be an accurate and efficient tool in thyroid nodule evaluation. Thyroid nodule aspiration can be acquired with either of two techniques: the short axis, in which only the tip of the needle is observed, and the long axis, in which the entire length of the needle is observed. Our retrospective study aimed to compare the adequacy of the two techniques.

Background: Patients with advanced salivary gland malignancies (SGCs) have few therapy options. Although results from newly published trials suggest that checkpoint inhibition may be useful in a subgroup of patients, there are no clear criteria for PD-L1 score in SGCs. Chemotherapy benefits were observed to be limited, with a dismal prognosis in unresectable and high-grade SGC.

GITR is a TNF receptor, and its activation promotes immune responses and drives antitumor activity. The receptor is activated by the GITR ligand (GITRL), which is believed to cluster receptors into a high-order array. Immunotherapeutic agonist antibodies also activate the receptor, but their mechanisms are not well characterized.

Messenger RNA-based vaccines against COVID-19 induce a robust anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody response with potent viral neutralization activity. Antibody effector functions are determined by their constant region subclasses and by their glycosylation patterns, but their role in vaccine efficacy is unclear. Moreover, whether vaccination induces antibodies similar to those in patients with COVID-19 remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Arginine balance in lysosomes is crucial for the growth and metabolism of mammalian cells, particularly within macrophages where the protozoan parasite causing leishmaniasis resides.
  • When infected, the parasite detects low arginine levels through a surface sensor, activating a response that increases the abundance and activity of an arginine transporter, necessary for its survival.
  • Disruption of this response through gene editing demonstrated that while the mutants could grow normally in lab settings, they were significantly less effective at developing and infecting within host macrophages and mice, highlighting the importance of arginine sensing for the parasite's pathogenicity.

Oxyntomodulin (OXM) is an endogenous gastrointestinal hormone, which activates both the Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and the glucagon receptor (GCGR). However, OXM has shortcomings including poor GLP-1R agonism to control glycemia, short half-life and others. Inspired from the sequence relationship between OXM and glucagon, in this study, we introduced different C-terminus residues of GLP-1, exenatide and OXM to glucagon to get a series of hybrid peptides with enhanced GLP-1R activation.
