Article Synopsis
  • A study from 1991 said left-handed people die about nine years younger than right-handed people, but later research questioned this finding.
  • Researchers created a new way to analyze death data from the U.S. to see if changes in left-handedness over the years affected life expectancy.
  • They discovered that although there might be a small difference in life expectancy, it wasn't significant enough to say that left-handed people die much earlier than right-handed people.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a growing opportunity to analyze health indicators in small geographic areas thanks to better data and modeling techniques, which can enhance local health programs.
  • Using data from India's 2011 Census and 2016 Health Survey, researchers predicted child health issues at the village level, finding significant variations in child stunting rates between villages.
  • This village-level analysis could transform health policy discussions in India by allowing for better prioritization and targeting of interventions based on specific local needs.

While digital trace data from sources like search engines hold enormous potential for tracking and understanding human behavior, these streams of data lack information about the actual experiences of those individuals generating the data. Moreover, most current methods ignore or under-utilize human processing capabilities that allow humans to solve problems not yet solvable by computers (human computation). We demonstrate how behavioral research, linking digital and real-world behavior, along with human computation, can be utilized to improve the performance of studies using digital data streams.
