Background: There have been significant changes in the lifestyles of individuals in the past few decades, which has led to increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Both smoking and chewing forms of tobacco are highly prevalent, especially in India, and are implicated as causes of diseases, including oropharyngeal carcinomas. Effective tobacco cessation techniques and sources can help overcome addiction and reduce the disease burden in society.

Background: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is characterized by upper airway dysfunction and is linked to severe health issues. Individuals with SDB have distinct craniofacial morphology for which orthodontists are most suitable for the management due to their dental expertise.

Objective: The primary goal was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice among otorhinolaryngologists regarding orthodontic intervention for Paediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (POSA).

Methods: An online survey was conducted by sending an email invitation to members of The Association of Otorhinolaryngologists of Karnataka, India. A total of 141 otorhinolaryngologists participated in the survey.

This study focuses on assessing psychological stress in first-year medical students in Eastern India and aims to identify its primary causes. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 125 first-year MBBS students in a tertiary care medical teaching institution in eastern India.

Effect of platelet-rich fibrin membrane on gingival crevicular fluid alkaline phosphatase levels in patients undergoing periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics.

Background: The present study is aimed to compare the osteoblastic activity in periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) with and without the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane by evaluating the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), alkaline phosphate (ALP) levels and also to explore the efficiency of PRF membrane in terms of healing.

Methods: A split-mouth randomized controlled trial, which comprised 16 sites, was randomly treated with PAOO + PRF membrane and PAOO alone. The primary outcome was to analyze the GCF ALP levels at baseline, 3rd week, 5th week (2 weeks after surgery, 1 h before and after activation), 7th week (4 weeks after surgery), and 9th week (6 weeks after surgery).

Evaluation of injectable platelet-rich fibrin effect on the rate of canine retraction and alkaline phosphatase levels: An in-vivo study.

Introduction: With time, the treatment protocol has changed, and currently, there is a new school of treatment called accelerated orthodontics, wherein the goal is to shorten the time. In this study, a liquid formulation of platelet-rich fibrin such as injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF), was used, and its effect on the rate of canine retraction and the crevicular alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were studied.

Methods: Thirteen patients were recruited for this study with a mean age of 20.

Forgotten Chemo-Port Leading to Chylothorax: A Rare Presentation.

Chylothorax is an uncommon cause of pleural effusion in routine clinical practice. Thoracic surgery, trauma and malignancy are the leading causes of chylothorax accounting for more than 90% of cases.1,2 We report this rare case of a middle aged lady with treated carcinoma breast who presented with left-sided chylothorax secondary to subclavian vein and superior vena cava thrombosis caused by a longstanding indwelling chemo-port in the right internal jugular vein.

Analysis of an Herbal Ayurdantham Medicated Tooth liquid on Dentinal Tubule Occlusion using Scanning Electron Microscopy.

Background: Dentin hypersensitivity is described as "short sharp pain arising from exposed dentin in response to various stimuli typically thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic or chemical and cannot be ascribed to any other form of dental defect or disease." Dentine hypersensitivity can be treated with various desensitizing agents ,where oral rinse has a promising effect in delivering the therapeutic effect all over the tooth surface including interproximal areas, as they can flow and reach areas where toothpastes are not much effective, hence the occlusion of dentinal tubules using Ayurdhantam medicated an herbal mouthwash was evaluated.

Methodology: Twenty such dentinal blocks were obtained; the surfaces of each dentin block were polished using a silicon carbide disc for 30 s to create a basic smear layer.

Synthesis and characterisation of neem leaf extract, 2, 3-dehydrosalanol and quercetin dihydrate mediated silver nano particles for therapeutic applications.

The utility of green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in veterinary medicine is steadily increasing as they have many therapeutic applications against pathogens and arthropods of livestock. In this study, green AgNPs using neem (N-AgNPs), 2,3-dehydrosalanol (2,3-DHS-AgNPs) and quercetin dihydrate (QDH-AgNPs) were synthesised and characterised. Synthesised compounds were characterised by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the peak absorbance was recorded at 370 nm for neem extract.

In vitro evaluation of acaricidal activity of novel green silver nanoparticles against deltamethrin resistance Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

An investigation was undertaken to study, for the first time, in vitro acaricidal activity of green silver nanoparticles on deltamethrin resistance Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. The compounds tested were neem coated silver nanoparticles (N-Ag NPs), deltamethrin neem coated silver nanoparticles (DN-Ag NPs), 2, 3 dehydrosalannol (2,3 DHS), 2, 3 DHS coated silver nanoparticles (2, 3-DHS-Ag NPs), Quercetin dihydrate (QDH) and QDH coated silver nanoparticles (QDH-Ag NPs). Also included in this study, for the purpose of comparison, were neem leaf extract (NLE), silver nitrate (AgNO) and deltamethrin (D).

Malodor reductions and improved oral hygiene by toothbrushing and mouthrinsing.

Objective: This clinical study compared the effects of an antibacterial regimen, comprising a triclosan toothpaste and a 0.075% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mouthrinse, on malodor, self-reported malodor, and oral hygiene measures such as dental plaque, gingivitis, and bleeding relative to brushing with a fluoride toothpaste.

Materials And Methods: At baseline, 36 subjects were evaluated for malodor (9-point organoleptic scale [OLT]), dental plaque (Turesky modification of Quigley-Hein; PI), gingivitis (Lφe-Silness; GI) and bleeding (Ainamo and Bay; BI) and randomized to (1) tooth brushing with fluoride toothpaste, or (2) a regimen comprising tooth brushing with a triclosan toothpaste and mouth rinsing with CPC mouthrinse.

Eco-friendly dentistry is currently transforming the medical and dental field to decrease its affect on our natural environment and reduce the amount of waste being produced. Eco-friendly dentistry uses a sustainable approach to encourage dentists to implement new strategies to try and reduce the energy being consumed and the large amount of waste being produced by the industry. Many reasonable, practical and easy alternatives do exist which would reduce the environmental footprint of a dental office were it to follow the 'green' recommendations.

Gold nanorods embedded discotic nanoribbons.

It is shown that gold nanorods (GNRs) can be easily inserted into the supramolecular order of discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) along the director without disturbing their mesomorphism. GNRs embedded discotic nanoribbons, useful for constructing devices like thin film transistors, sensors, etc., are prepared by simple solution processing of GNR-DLC nanocomposites.

Development, in vitro and in vivo evaluation of novel injectable smart gels of azithromycin for chronic periodontitis.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition affecting teeth resulting in progressive destruction of periodontal ligaments, resorption of alveolar bone and loss of teeth. Treatment of periodontitis includes surgical and non surgical management. Systemic antibiotics are also used for the treatment of periodontitis.

Clinico-pathological correlation of non specific inflammation in bowel histology with joint manifestation in a tertiary center in South India.

The aim of our study was to determine whether the pattern of arthropathy in patients with suspected enteropathic arthritis bore any relation to their gut histology and specifically to chronic nonspecific gut inflammation. Records of 39 patients with suspected enteropathic arthritis from rheumatology clinic between January 2006 and December 2008 who had undergone ileocolonoscopic biopsy were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were grouped into 3 categories, namely those with normal bowel histology, those with mild nonspecific chronic changes, and those with histology suggestive of inflammatory bowel disease.

Idiopathic non-cirrhotic intrahepatic portal hypertension: common cause of cryptogenic intrahepatic portal hypertension in a Southern Indian tertiary hospital.

Background And Aim: Patients with intrahepatic portal hypertension and negative etiological work-up for liver disease are often labeled as having cryptogenic cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate causes of liver disease in patients with unexplained intrahepatic portal hypertension.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed cause of liver disease in all patients with cryptogenic intrahepatic portal hypertension who underwent liver biopsies between June 2005 to June 2007 in our center.
