Intestinal interstitial fluid isolation provides novel insight into the human host-microbiome interface.

Aims: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is composed of distinct sub-regions, which exhibit segment-specific differences in microbial colonization and (patho)physiological characteristics. Gut microbes can be collectively considered as an active endocrine organ. Microbes produce metabolites, which can be taken up by the host and can actively communicate with the immune cells in the gut lamina propria with consequences for cardiovascular health.

Improving Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery in Canada: A Call to Action-Part II.

In May 2022, we challenged our colleagues to evaluate their educational approaches, policies, recruitment strategies, and leadership organizations with an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) lens. Two virtual national round table meetings were held in 2023 to discuss approaches to integration of the EDI principles into current Canadian plastic surgery training programmes. Additionally, integrative documents and processes were established within our programme to act as a guide for integration of the principles of EDI in the areas of resident education, recruitment, and retention.

Deep learning for prediction of post-thrombectomy outcomes based on admission CT angiography in large vessel occlusion stroke.

Purpose: Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) is the first line of imaging in the diagnosis of Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO) strokes. We trained and independently validated end-to-end automated deep learning pipelines to predict 3-month outcomes after anterior circulation LVO thrombectomy based on admission CTAs.

Methods: We split a dataset of 591 patients into training/cross-validation (n = 496) and independent test set (n = 95).

Clustering of Social Determinants of Health as an Indicator of Meaningful Subgroups within an African American Population: Application of Latent Class Analysis.

Background: Health disparities between people who are African American (AA) versus their White counterparts have been well established, but disparities among AA people have not. The current study introduces a systematic method to determine subgroups within a sample of AA people based on their social determinants of health.

Methods: Health screening data collected in the West Side of Chicago, an underserved predominantly AA area, in 2018 were used.

Automated detection of early signs of irreversible ischemic change on CTA source images in patients with large vessel occlusion.

Purpose: To create and validate an automated pipeline for detection of early signs of irreversible ischemic change from admission CTA in patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke.

Methods: We retrospectively included 368 patients for training and 143 for external validation. All patients had anterior circulation LVO stroke, endovascular therapy with successful reperfusion, and follow-up diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).

Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer among cisgender women worldwide, with an incidence that continues to rise. Breast reconstruction is increasingly recognized as an integral part of breast cancer management. In tandem, the population of trans women is also increasing.

Evaluation of the utility and cost of secondary confirmatory testing for Neisseria gonorrhoeae identification from culture.

Current guideline recommends the use of two identification methods for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) is now used for primary identification and may be sufficient for definitive identification of N. gonorrhoeae.

Radiomics-Based Prediction of Collateral Status from CT Angiography of Patients Following a Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke.

Background: A major driver of individual variation in long-term outcomes following a large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke is the degree of collateral arterial circulation. We aimed to develop and evaluate machine-learning models that quantify LVO collateral status using admission computed tomography angiography (CTA) radiomics.

Methods: We extracted 1116 radiomic features from the anterior circulation territories from admission CTAs of 600 patients experiencing an acute LVO stroke.

Heart 2 Heart: Pilot Study of a Church-Based Community Health Worker Intervention for African Americans with Hypertension.

African Americans (AAs) have higher prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension than Whites, which leads to reduced life expectancy. Barriers to achieving blood pressure control in AAs include mistrust of healthcare and poor adherence to medication and dietary recommendations. We conducted a pilot study of a church-based community health worker (CHW) intervention to reduce blood pressure among AAs by providing support and strategies to improve diet and medication adherence.

The Impact of Language on Hospital Outcomes for COVID-19 Patients: A Study of Non-English Speaking Hispanic Patients.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated health inequities, as demonstrated by the disproportionate rates of infection, hospitalization, and death in marginalized racial and ethnic communities. Although non-English speaking (NES) patients have substantially higher rates of COVID-19 positivity than other groups, research has not yet examined primary language, as determined by the use of interpreter services, and hospital outcomes for patients with COVID-19.

Methods: Data were collected from 1,770 patients with COVID-19 admitted to an urban academic health medical center in the Chicago, Illinois area from March 2020 to April 2021.

Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) comprises cancers of the tonsils, tongue base, soft palate, and uvula. The staging of oropharyngeal cancers varies depending upon the presence or absence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-directed pathogenesis. The incidence of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer (HPV + OPSCC) is expected to continue to rise over the coming decades.

Development of a targeted behavioral treatment for smoking cessation among individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Objective: Smoking cessation for individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is medically critical, but smoking for coping motives is a common barrier.

Method: In this evaluation of three treatment components (Mindfulness, Practice Quitting, and Countering Emotional Behaviors), we conducted two studies guided by the ORBIT model. Study 1 was a single-case design experiment (N = 18); Study 2 was a pilot feasibility study (N = 30).

Rationale and design of the Heart-to-Heart study: A church-based intervention to reduce blood pressure in African Americans.

Heart-to-Heart (H2H) is a church-based behavioral cluster randomized trial to measure the effectiveness of a lifestyle education program for reducing blood pressure (BP) in African American adults with uncontrolled BP. Design and implementation of this study were informed by our ALIVE pilot study conducted with church pastors and leaders using a community-based participatory research methodology. The current study employs a cross-over design in which all participants receive two 6-month programs in different orders: the intervention arm receives the H2H program first, followed by a financial education program, and the comparator arm receives the programs in the reverse order.

Background: People with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PWH) have increased cardiovascular risk. Higher leukocyte count has been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) events in the general population. It is unknown whether the leukocyte-CAD association also applies to PWH.

Differences in the functional brain architecture of sustained attention and working memory in youth and adults.

Sustained attention (SA) and working memory (WM) are critical processes, but the brain networks supporting these abilities in development are unknown. We characterized the functional brain architecture of SA and WM in 9- to 11-year-old children and adults. First, we found that adult network predictors of SA generalized to predict individual differences and fluctuations in SA in youth.

Extradigital glomus tumour of the thigh causing 8 years of undiagnosed debilitating pain.
