The low volatility of drugs, like fentanyl, makes room temperature vapor detection of illicit drugs challenging, but feasible by atmospheric flow tube-mass spectrometry (AFT-MS). AFT-MS is a non-contact vapor detection approach capable of ultra-trace detection of drugs, including fentanyl and its analogs at low parts-per-quadrillion (ppq) levels.

This work focuses on the behavior of technetium-99 (Tc) within a hydrated-lime based waste form developed as a candidate to immobilize high-sulphate containing liquid wastes known to inhibit cement solidification when using a fly ash based formulation. In leach testing, the hydrated-lime based formulation demonstrated improvement in Tc retention over a fly ash containing formulation beginning after 14 d leaching.

Introduction: Currently we are faced with countless patients with prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the consequent increase in the need for tracheostomies and the risks that this includes for both patients and staff.
Objective: It is necessary to establish a safety protocol for the performance of percutaneous tracheostomies in order to reduce the associated infections.
Material And Methods: 77 patients underwent tracheostomies between March 2020 and March 2021, evaluating the safety of the protocol and the rate of contagion among the staff.
Ettringite is a naturally occurring mineral found in cementitious matrices that is known for its ability to incorporate environmentally mobile oxyanion contaminants. To better assess this immobilization mechanism for contaminants within cementitious waste forms intended for nuclear waste storage, this work explores how mixed oxyanion contaminants compete for ettringite incorporation and influence the evolving mineralogy. Ettringite was precipitated in the presence of TcO, IO, and/or CrO, known contaminants of concern to nuclear waste treatment, over pre-determined precipitation periods.

Technetium-99 immobilization in low-temperature nuclear waste forms often relies on additives that reduce environmentally mobile pertechnetate (TcO) to insoluble Tc(IV) species. However, this is a short-lived solution unless reducing conditions are maintained over the hazardous life cycle of radioactive wastes (some ∼10,000 years). Considering recent experimental observations, this work explores how rapid formation of ettringite [CaAl(SO)(OH)·26(HO)], a common mineral formed in cementitious waste forms, may be used to directly immobilize TcO.

To prevent the release of radioiodine during the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel or in the management of other wastes, many technologies have been developed for iodine capture. The capture is only part of the challenge as a durable waste form is required to ensure safe disposal of the radioiodine. View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To evaluate the analgesic effect of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Pereskia lychnidiflora, the prospection of secondary metabolites and the toxicologic analysis.
Materials And Methods: Analgesic activity was evaluated by testing acetic acid and formalin in NIH mice at a concentration of 30, 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight, using Ibuprofen control at 200 mg/kg and distilled water as the target. Secondary metabolites were prospected using the thin layer chromatography method and the toxicity of the extract was evaluated in vivo according to the maximum dose of 2,000 mg/kg body weight.
Introduction: Percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy (PDT) has several advantages over traditional surgical tracheostomy. However, it is still performed using bronchoscopy guidance.
Objective: To suggest the safety of unassisted PDT, without bronchoscopy guidance, based on bed-side screening flow chart evaluation.
Background: Current guidelines recommend blood cultures in skin and soft-tissue infection (SSTI) patients only with signs of systemic toxicity and wound cultures for severe purulent infections. Our objectives were to determine: 1) blood and wound culture yields in patients admitted with SSTIs; 2) whether injection drug users (IDUs) and febrile patients had higher blood culture yields; and 3) whether blood and wound cultures grew organisms sensitive to typical SSTI empiric antibiotics.
Methods: We prospectively enrolled adult patients admitted from the ED with SSTIs at an urban hospital.
Conclusion: Prognosis was very poor as soon as a local failure developed. Up-front treatment should be optimized to control this rare disease. We propose producing and reporting recommendations via a concerted oncologic physician referral network.

Classic surgical resolution of this disease includes bilateral cervical exploration with exhibition of the four parathyroid glands and evaluation of the suspicious gland with a rapid biopsy. We report a 79 years old female with a primary hyperparathyroidism in whom the adenoma causing the disease was located with the help of an intraoperative gamma-probe that detected the zone of higher radiation counting of Tc99m Sestamibi, that was injected preoperatively.

Microsomal cytochrome P450 and peroxisomal activity were studied in liver of rats 7 days after two-thirds hepatectomy or bile duct ligation (BDL). Both surgical models decreased the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450 content, but only cholestasis, produced by BDL, decrease the microsomal metabolism of lauric acid and aminopyrine, peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation and catalase activity. The microsomal and peroxisomal activities responded in a coordinate way to cholestasis and two-thirds hepatectomy.

Different doses of fish oil containing 20% eicosapentaenoic acid and 10% docosahexaenoic acid were provided daily to the rats for seven days. In all the groups studied, the lauric acid metabolism was higher in kidney microsomes and the aminopyrine metabolism in the liver microsomes.
