Article Synopsis
  • Waste engine oils are hazardous wastes from transportation and heavy machinery, leading to severe environmental pollution and health risks due to improper handling and disposal.
  • Soil pollution disrupts ecosystems and plant growth, while surface water pollution threatens aquatic life, and air pollution contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and respiratory issues.
  • The paper discusses the toxic components of waste engine oils, their effects on health and environments, and suggests preventive measures and remediation techniques to lessen these risks.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how endophytic fungi affect the growth and ability of Prosopis juliflora to thrive in heavy metal-polluted soils, using 13 fungal isolates alongside the plant for decontamination purposes.
  • - Results showed that fungal treatment led to increased biomass, root and shoot lengths, and production of beneficial compounds like carotenoids and amino acids in Prosopis juliflora, which enhance plant growth.
  • - Fungi-treated plants displayed higher heavy metal accumulation and increased activity of protective enzymes, suggesting that using fungi with Prosopis juliflora can be an effective method for bioremediation of contaminated soils.

The valorisation of keratinous wastes involves biorefining and recovering the bioresource materials from the keratinous wastes to produce value-added keratin-based bioproducts with a broad application, distribution, and marketability potential. Valorisation of keratinous wastes increases the value of the wastes and enables more sustainable waste management towards a circular bioeconomy. The abundance of keratinous wastes as feedstock from agro-industrial processing, wool processing, and grooming industry benefits biorefinery and extraction of keratins, which could be the optimal solution for developing an ecologically and economically sustainable keratin-based economy.
