Background: Evidence on the cardiovascular health effects of cannabis use is limited. We designed a prospective cohort study of older Veterans (66 to 68 years) with coronary artery disease (CAD) to understand the cardiovascular consequences of cannabis use. We describe the cohort construction, baseline characteristics, and health behaviors that were associated with smoking cannabis.

Methods: A mobile acoustic UFM application represents a noninvasive method to estimate the urine flow rate by recording voiding sounds with a smartphone. Male pediatric patients who were undergoing UFM testing were prospectively recruited, and the voiding sounds were recorded and analyzed.
Importance: Deferred diabetic foot screening and delays in timely care of acute foot complications during the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to an increase in limb loss.
Objective: To evaluate the association of the COVID-19 pandemic with diabetes-related care measures, foot complications, and amputation.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This population-based cohort study included all adult residents of Ontario, Canada, with diabetes and compared the rates of selected outcomes from January 1, 2020, to February 23, 2021, vs January 1, 2019, to February 23, 2020.
Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic wearing a mask in public has been recommended in some settings and mandated in others. How often this advice is followed, how well, and whether it inadvertently leads to more disease transmission opportunities due to a combination of improper use and physical distancing lapses is unknown.
Design: Cross-sectional observational study performed in June-August 2020.
Background: Medical assistance in dying has been available in Canada for 5 years, but it is unclear which practices contribute to high-quality care. We aimed to describe patient and family perspectives of quality of care for medical assistance in dying.
Methods: We conducted a multi-centre, qualitative descriptive study, including face to face or virtual one-hour interviews using a semi-structured guide.
Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) are the 2 most common cardiac surgery procedures in North America. We derived and externally validated clinical models to estimate the likelihood of death within 30 days of CABG, AVR or combined CABG + AVR.
Methods: We obtained data from the CorHealth Ontario Cardiac Registry and several linked population health administrative databases from Ontario, Canada.
The Cox proportional hazards model is used extensively in clinical and epidemiological research. A key assumption of this model is that of proportional hazards. A variable satisfies the proportional hazards assumption if the effect of that variable on the hazard function is constant over time.

Screening for breast and cervical cancer is recommended by clinical guidelines; however, utilization of these tests in people with diabetes has been unclear due to methodological limitations in the evidence base. We used administrative data to determine the association between diabetes and the rates of becoming up-to-date with periodic breast and cervical cancer screening over a 20-year period.

Design: Population-based retrospective cohort study using linked administrative health data in Ontario, Canada.
Setting: We followed adults with a first-ever diagnosis of ischaemic stroke, cancer or schizophrenia between 2002 and 2013 from index event to death, loss to follow-up, or end of follow-up in 2018.
Background We evaluated whether immigration status modified the association between sex and the quality of primary cardiovascular disease prevention in Ontario, Canada. Methods and Results We used a population-based administrative database-derived cohort of community-dwelling adults (aged ≥40 years) without prior cardiovascular disease residing in Ontario on January 1, 2011. In the preceding 3 years, we evaluated screening for hyperlipidemia and diabetes in those not previously diagnosed; diabetes control (HbA <7%); and medication use to control hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or diabetes in those with previous diagnosis.

We describe the rates of emergency department visits for stroke and myocardial infarction through the pandemic phases.
Methods: We used linked administrative data to compare the weekly age- and sex-standardized rates of visits for stroke and myocardial infarction in Ontario, Canada in the first 9 months of 2020 to the mean baseline rates (2015-2019) using rate ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
Background: This study aimed to assess whether surgical case volume for lateral neck dissection has an impact on the survival of patients who have well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) with lateral cervical node metastases. The authors used a population-based cohort study design.
Methods: The study cohort consisted of WDTC patients in Ontario Canada who underwent thyroidectomy and lateral neck dissection.
Background Small observational studies have suggested that statin users have a lower risk of dying with COVID-19. We tested this hypothesis in a large, population-based cohort of adults in 2 of Canada's most populous provinces: Ontario and Alberta. Methods and Results We examined reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction swab positivity rates for SARS-CoV-2 in adults using statins compared with nonusers.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether cardiologists' billing amounts in a fee-for-service environment are associated with better patient-level clinical outcomes. Methods and Results A retrospective cohort study was conducted using administrative claims data of cardiologists in Ontario, Canada between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2016.

Methods: We performed a population-based study of patients who had undergone TAAA repair in Ontario, Canada, from 2006 to 2017. The association of baseline risk factors with mortality and complications after repair was examined using Cox hazards models with hospital-specific random effects.
Diabetic neuropathic pain is a common and devastating complication of type 1 diabetes, but the mechanism by which it develops and persists is yet to be fully elucidated. This study utilised high-dimensional suspension mass cytometry in a pilot cohort to investigate differences in peripheral blood immunophenotypes between type 1 diabetes patients with (n = 9) and without (n = 9) peripheral neuropathic pain. The abundance and activation of several leukocyte subsets were investigated with unsupervised clustering approaches FlowSOM and SPADE, as well as by manual gating.

Given the high prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), we determined the predictors of mortality and hospital resource use among patients with NAFLD admitted with COVID-19 by using electronic medical records data for adult patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in a multihospital health system who were discharged between March and December 2020. NAFLD was diagnosed by imaging or liver biopsy without other liver diseases.

However, few studies have examined this association in Western populations. We sought to evaluate the association between circumcision and the risk of acquiring HIV among males from Ontario, Canada.

The use of such weights induces a within-person homogeneity in outcomes that must be accounted for when estimating the variance of the estimated treatment effect. Knowledge of the variance inflation factor (VIF), which describes the extent to which the effective sample size has been reduced by weighting, allows for conducting sample size and power calculations for observational studies that use propensity score weighting.

Methods: A Canadian national expert panel was convened to define appropriate AMI patients for reporting and develop prediction models. Preliminary candidate variable evaluation was conducted using Ontario patients hospitalized with a most responsible diagnosis of AMI from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2018.
Propensity score-based analysis is increasingly being used in observational studies to estimate the effects of treatments, interventions, and exposures. We introduce the concept of the propensity score and how it can be used in observational research. We describe 4 different ways of using the propensity score: matching on the propensity score, inverse probability of treatment weighting using the propensity score, stratification on the propensity score, and covariate adjustment on the propensity score (with a focus on the first 2).

However, there is debate across guidelines as to which patients with CAD benefit the most from these agents. This study investigated the association between RAASIs and cardiovascular outcomes and acute kidney injury in a contemporary cohort of patients with CAD.
