The purpose of this study is to compare the background regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in TIA patients with and without angiographically demonstrable lesions. 147 TIA patients with severe stenosis or occlusion of major vessels supplying the brain (A group) were compared with a similar group without any arterial lesion demonstrable by angiography (B group). Their rCBFs were measured by the intravenous Xe133 technique.

Changes in the vessel wall seen early after angioplasty included focal denudation of the endothelium, splits in the intima extending to and along the inner aspect of the media, focal intimal necrosis and adventitial hemorrhage. Extensive medial dissections were seen in the coronary arteries of the two patients who died 5 and 17 days after coronary angioplasty.

Experiments were performed on 31 cats anaesthetized with N2O/O2 plus supplemental drugs for immobilization and analgesia. Cortical Po2 was measured by the polarographic method using 25 microns Pt electrode (coated) and a 250 micron Ag-AgCl2 indifferent electrode, especially designed to rest lightly on the cortex by means of coiled spring support.

We have examined the autoregulation of local cortical blood flow (CoBF) and cortical oxygen tension (bPO2) in the rabbit. CoBF was measured continuously by using the heated thermocouple technique and bPo2 was monitored by the polarographic method.

Gross and microscopic examination of equivalent segments of abdominal aortas obtained at autopsy from 39 male patients aged 10 to 30 years (mean, 20.5 years) and 37 female patients aged 9 to 30 years (mean, 20.9 years) revealed no significant difference in the prevalence of aortic pre-atherosclerotic lesions in male v female patients.

We studied the influence of time, temperature, glucose concentration, and pH on results obtained by three commercially available column chromatographic procedures designed to quantify glycated hemoglobin. An affinity chromatographic procedure which measures total glycated hemoglobins (GHb) was compared with two ion-exchange column methods.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA system called the ultrasound macroscope has been developed to measure the ultrasonic properties of tissues. Based on the concept of the scanning acoustic microscope, it is capable of generating quantitative images of ultrasound velocity, attenuation and backscatter for macroscopic slices of tissue. By maintaining high resolution (approximately 120 microns at 13 MHz) the morphology of complex tissues is well delineated.

The accuracy and precision of HDL cholesterol determinations were similar for both methods. Either of these procedures would appear to be equally satisfactory for the assay of HDL cholesterol in the clinical laboratory.

Some observers believe this defect is the result of neuromuscular dysfunction with the demonstration of the unrelaxed muscle bundle; however, others believe it is the result of actual hypertrophy of the cricopharyngeal muscle. Radiologic and pathologic study of 24 unselected autopsy cases revealed cricopharyngeal hypertrophy in 13 cases by radiologic criteria.

Due to the potential impact fluoride has on the prevention of dental caries and the lack of research on health education programs in Head Start, a status study was conducted to identify what is being taught to pre-school children and their parents about fluoride. The content of the oral health education program was adequate in terms of toothbrushing, nutrition, and functions of and visits to the dentist. The most significant problem was the lack of education about the significance of fluoride.

All patients showed this spasm on hemodynamically insignificant (less than 50% diameter narrowing) obstruction. Four patients did not respond to therapy with calcium channel antagonists and nitrates and subsequently developed recurrent stenosis.

This study was carried out using 14 New Zealand White rabbits. The effects of episodic stress were measured simultaneously on brain functional metabolism by monitoring cortical oxygen tension (brain pO2), cortical cerebral blood flow (cCBF), cortical blood volume, and mitochondrial oxidative metabolism.

This training is done outside the busy hospital environment so that no interruptions are encountered. Following this initial experience, weekly research sessions are continued to maintain proficiency and to develop new techniques.

Fifty patients who showed severe stenosis or occlusion of the vertebrobasilar artery territory were studied by angiography. Lesions in 13 of these patients were limited to the vertebrobasilar artery (limited VB group), and 37 patients showed combined vertebrobasilar/carotid artery lesions (combined VB-C group).

Average mean rCBF initially rose to 110% at 1 week, then gradually fell to 105% at 6 months, and 85% at 2 years.
