Comprehensive evaluation of malaria reactive surveillance and response strategies in Lao People's Democratic Republic: a mixed-methods study.

Objectives: To achieve malaria elimination by 2030, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) adopted a reactive surveillance and response (RASR) strategy of malaria case notification within 1 day, case investigation and classification within 3 days and foci investigation and response within 7 days. It is important to evaluate the performance and feasibility of RASR implementation in Lao PDR so that the strategy may be optimised and better contribute towards the goal of malaria elimination.

Design: A mixed-methods study comprising of secondary data analysis of routinely collected malaria surveillance data, quantitative surveys and qualitative consultations was conducted in 2022.

Compliance mismatch between the synthetic graft and native artery has been speculated to be one of the main causes of intimal hyperplasia. However, changing the compliance of synthetic materials without altering material chemistry remains a challenge.

Background: Countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region aim to achieve malaria elimination by 2030. In the region, malaria is concentrated in high-risk areas and populations such as forest-going mobile and migrant populations (MMPs). However, routine protective measures such as long-lasting insecticidal nets do not prevent all infectious bites in these high-risk populations.

Purpose: To compare the utilization rate and usage patterns of pseudophakic and phakic donor corneas recovered by the Singapore Eye Bank.

Methods: Records of local donor corneas recovered by the Singapore Eye Bank from 2012 to 2017 were examined. Corneas that were deemed suitable for clinical use were stratified into phakic and pseudophakic groups.

Optimizing HIV Services for Key Populations in Public-Sector Clinics in Myanmar.

Key populations, ie, female sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who inject drugs, and people in prisons and other closed settings, experience stigma, discrimination, and structural barriers when accessing HIV prevention and care. Public health facilities in Myanmar became increasingly involved in HIV service delivery, leading to an urgent need for healthcare workers to provide client-centred, key population-friendly services. Between July 2017-June 2018, the Myanmar Ministry of Health and Sports and National AIDS Programme collaborated with ICAP at Columbia University and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to implement a quasi-experimental, multicomponent intervention including healthcare worker sensitization training with pre- and post- knowledge assessments, healthcare worker and client satisfaction surveys, and structural changes.

Vascular Imaging in Small Animals Using Clinical Ultrasound Scanners.

Conventional ultrasound with frequency (2-15 MHz) has been a global diagnostic and therapeutic tool in clinical medicine, and high-frequency ultrasound (>30 MHz) has been a powerful investigative device for preclinical studies such as cardiovascular research. In this chapter, we describe the use of conventional ultrasound with a 2.5-10 MHz transducer as an investigative device for the measurement/detection of blood flow in rabbit model.

Rabbit Surgery Protocol for End-to-End and End-to-Side Vascular Graft Anastomosis.

Preclinical testing in animal model is a required stage of vascular device development. Among small animal models, rabbits provide vasculature with relative larger caliber for anastomotic implantation of vascular grafts as preclinical testing before conducting large animal studies. Rabbits have similar hemostatic mechanism with human and can accommodate vascular grafts with various diameters at different locations, and thus provide a valid model to assess small-diameter vascular grafts.

Characteristics and significance of "green snake" bites in Myanmar, especially by the pit vipers Trimeresurus albolabris and Trimeresurus erythrurus.

Snakebite is an important problem in Myanmar. Regionally, bites by Eastern Russell's vipers, Daboia siamensis (Viperidae, Viperinae), and monocled cobras, Naja kaouthia are considered medically important, but those categorised as "green snake" bites are not. However, these may include bites by green pit vipers, Trimeresurus spp.

Integrative Profiling of T790M-Negative EGFR-Mutated NSCLC Reveals Pervasive Lineage Transition and Therapeutic Opportunities.

Purpose: Despite the established role of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in -mutated NSCLC, drug resistance inevitably ensues, with a paucity of treatment options especially in -negative resistance.

Experimental Design: We performed whole-exome and transcriptome analysis of 59 patients with first- and second-generation EGFR TKI-resistant metastatic -mutated NSCLC to characterize and compare molecular alterations mediating resistance in T790M-positive (T790M) and -negative (T790M) disease.

Results: Transcriptomic analysis revealed ubiquitous loss of adenocarcinoma lineage gene expression in T790M tumors, orthogonally validated using multiplex IHC.

Nonviral direct neuronal reprogramming holds significant potential in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, the issue of low reprogramming efficiency poses a major barrier to its application. Endothelial dysfunction has been implicated in atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, and stroke. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), found in the bone marrow and peripheral blood as rare cell population, demonstrated a high proliferation and differentiation capacity. Understanding how such diseases influence the quantity and functionality of EPCs is essential for the development of novel therapies.

Effect of Ethylene Oxide Sterilization on Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogel Compared with Gamma Radiation.

This study investigated the effects of terminal sterilization of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) biomaterials using clinically translatable techniques, specifically ethylene oxide (EtO) and gamma (γ) irradiation. While a few studies have reported the possibility of sterilizing PVA with γ-radiation, the use of EtO sterilization of PVA requires additional study. PVA solutions were chemically crosslinked with trisodium trimetaphosphate and sodium hydroxide.

Background: A series of interventions are required to prevent mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) starting from HIV testing of pregnant women, initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) or antiretroviral prophylaxis to HIV-positive pregnant women to providing HIV prophylaxis to newborn babies. Gaps in each step can significantly affect the effectiveness of PMTCT interventions. We aimed to determine the gap in initiation of ART/antiretroviral prophylaxis for pregnant women living with HIV, delay in initiation of ART/antiretroviral prophylaxis and factors associated with the delay.

More than 1 billion people globally are suffering from hypertension, which is a long-term incurable medical condition that can further lead to dangerous complications and death if left untreated. In earlier studies, the brain-gut peptide secretin (SCT) was found to be able to control blood pressure by its cardiovascular and pulmonary effects. For example, serum SCT in patients with congestive heart failure was one-third of the normal level.
