Background: Educational inclusion of students with disabilities has benefits for students with and without disabilities. However, general classroom education remains inaccessible for students with disabilities in Saudi Arabia despite policy reforms in the country.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted scientific research, teaching, and learning in higher education and forced many institutions to explore new modalities in response to the abrupt shift to remote learning. Accordingly, many colleges and universities struggled to provide the training, technology, and best practices to support faculty and students, especially those at historically disadvantaged and underrepresented institutions. In this study we investigate different remote learning modalities to improve and enhance research education training for faculty and students.

Severe Shivering on Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation-Raising the Circuit Temperature to Stop Rhabdomyolysis: A Case Report.

We report a case of severe shivering resulting in rhabdomyolysis while on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) that resolved after hyperthermia was induced using the ECMO circuit. The patient developed shivering approximately 24 hours after venoarterial ECMO cannulation for refractory ventricular tachycardia. The shivering caused rhabdomyolysis and necessitated cisatracurium infusion.

Introduction: A pneumatic tube system (PTS) is a cost-effective, rapid transport modality that utilizes induced pressure changes. We evaluated the clinical importance of 2 transport modalities, human courier and PTS, for blood gas specimens.

Methods: Following open heart surgery, 35 simultaneous pairs of arterial and venous blood gas specimens were analyzed from 20 subjects.

Effect of Thoracentesis on Intubated Patients with Acute Lung Injury.

Pleural effusions occur frequently in mechanically ventilated patients, but no consensus exists regarding the clinical benefit of effusion drainage. We sought to determine the impact of thoracentesis on gas exchange in patients with differing severities of acute lung injury (ALI). A retrospective analysis was conducted on therapeutic thoracenteses performed on intubated patients in an adult surgical intensive care unit of a tertiary center.

Effects of chronic manganese exposure on attention and working memory in non-human primates.

Manganese (Mn) is essential for a variety of physiological processes, but at elevated levels, can be neurotoxic. While cognitive dysfunction has been recently appreciated to occur as a result of chronic Mn exposures, it is still unclear as to which cognitive domains are most susceptible to disruption by Mn exposure. We previously described early appearing Mn-induced changes in performance on a paired associate learning task in monkeys chronically exposed to Mn and suggested that performance of this task might be a sensitive tool for detecting cognitive dysfunction resulting from Mn exposure.

Thoracentesis outcomes: a 12-year experience.

Background: Despite a lack of evidence in the literature, several assumptions exist about the safety of thoracentesis in clinical guidelines and practice patterns. We aimed to evaluate specific demographic and clinical factors that have been commonly associated with complications such as iatrogenic pneumothorax, re-expansion pulmonary oedema (REPE) and bleeding.

Methods: We performed a cohort study of inpatients who underwent thoracenteses at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) from August 2001 to October 2013.

Background: Many factors affect the accuracy of hemoglobin concentration values. In this study, we evaluated whether the hemoglobin concentration obtained by means of arterial blood gas (ABG) co-oximetry and complete blood count (CBC) central laboratory techniques clinically correlate when using simultaneous measurements of hemoglobin concentration obtained during complex spine fusion surgery.

Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive procedure for analysis of retinal morphology. Significant changes in the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in Parkinson's disease (PD) have been reported, and the current study was performed to examine whether such changes can also be detected in an animal model of PD.

Descriptions of neuropsychological dysfunction following chronic Mn exposure have been somewhat inconsistent though, likely owing to different measures of exposure in different populations, complicated by factors of mixed exposures and differences in neuropsychological tests administered.

Substituted thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidines as adenosine A2A receptor antagonists.

Congregational participation and supports for children and adults with disabilities: parent perceptions.

Although religion and spirituality have received relatively limited attention in the literature addressing people with disabilities, each is strongly associated with a host of positive outcomes, including enhanced quality of life. One way to participate in religious activities and enhance spirituality is to participate in a faith community. In this article, we report findings from a survey of 416 parents exploring the ways in which they and their children with disabilities participated in their congregations and examining factors associated with participation and inclusion in those communities.
