A Conceptual Model Using CliftonStrengths to Support Dental Hygiene Students' Professional Development.

Professional development is instrumental in the ongoing success of healthcare professionals and students. The purpose of the second year of this two-year study was to continue to apply the results from the CliftonStrengths assessment to support entry-level dental hygiene students' professional development and to create a conceptual model for professional development in dental hygiene education. CliftonStrengths were incorporated in didactic and community learning experiences throughout year two of the dental hygiene curriculum.

Combination immunotherapy of glioblastoma with dendritic cell cancer vaccines, anti-PD-1 and poly I:C.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a lethal cancer with limited therapeutic options. Dendritic cell (DC)-based cancer vaccines provide a promising approach for GBM treatment. Clinical studies suggest that other immunotherapeutic agents may be combined with DC vaccines to further enhance antitumor activity.

Undergraduate dental hygiene education programs may not provide sufficient training in professional development to prepare graduates to be primary health care providers. The purpose of the year one of a two-year study was to apply the results from a strengths assessment instrument to entry-level dental hygiene students' learning experiences and faculty instruction of students. An exploratory research design including quantitative and qualitative methods was used among a convenience sample of entry-level dental hygiene students.

Operationalising the "One Health" approach in India: facilitators of and barriers to effective cross-sector convergence for zoonoses prevention and control.

Background: There is a strong policy impetus for the One Health cross-sectoral approach to address the complex challenge of zoonotic diseases, particularly in low/lower middle income countries (LMICs). Yet the implementation of this approach in LMIC contexts such as India has proven challenging, due partly to the relatively limited practical guidance and understanding on how to foster and sustain cross-sector collaborations. This study addresses this gap by exploring the facilitators of and barriers to successful convergence between the human, animal and environmental health sectors in India.

Avian Influenza H7N9 Virus Adaptation to Human Hosts.

Avian influenza virus A (H7N9), after circulating in avian hosts for decades, was identified as a human pathogen in 2013. Herein, amino acid substitutions possibly essential for human adaptation were identified by comparing the 4706 aligned overlapping nonamer position sequences (1-9, 2-10, etc.) of the reported 2014 and 2017 avian and human H7N9 datasets.

Prevalence of coccidioidomycosis in cystic fibrosis patients residing in Southern Arizona.

Unlabelled: Sparse data exists about patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their risk of contracting coccidioidiomycosis or Valley Fever, which is highly endemic in southern Arizona. A retrospective review of medical records of 79 adult CF patients residing in Arizona was performed. Two cases only of coccidioidomycosis were documented between in the 790 patient years.

Alternative Approaches to Adenotonsillectomy and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for the Management of Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): A Review.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is considered first-line treatment in the management of pediatric patients without a surgically correctible cause of obstruction who have confirmed moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The evidence supports its reduction on patient morbidity and positive influence on neurobehavioral outcome. Unfortunately, in clinical practice, many patients either refuse CPAP or cannot tolerate it.

Dynamics of Influenza A (H5N1) virus protein sequence diversity.

Background: Influenza A (H5N1) virus is a global concern with potential as a pandemic threat. High sequence variability of influenza A viruses is a major challenge for effective vaccine design. A continuing goal towards this is a greater understanding of influenza A (H5N1) proteome sequence diversity in the context of the immune system (antigenic diversity), the dynamics of mutation, and effective strategies to overcome the diversity for vaccine design.

Attributes of Effective Clinical Teachers in Dental Hygiene Education.

Many health professions have identified characteristics of an effective clinical instructor and used this information to create tools to measure clinical teaching effectiveness (CTE) in their disciplines. However, minimal research has been conducted to explore the attributes of an effective clinical instructor in dental hygiene education. The aim of this study was to identify the attributes of dental hygiene clinical instructors associated with effective teaching.

Perceptions of Dental Hygienists About Thesis Completion in Graduate Education.

Few studies have been published on thesis completion experiences of master's degree students. However, for doctoral students, dissertation completion has been found to be dependent on individual, relational, and institutional factors. The aim of this study was to examine dental hygienists' perceptions of their experiences completing a thesis as a requirement for an advanced degree.

Prevention of Concussion.

Concussion is a common pediatric problem, and the best point of intervention would be to prevent a concussion from occurring. Unfortunately, information in this area has inconsistent support for the various methods that have been attempted. In infants, concussions are typically related to safety hazards in the environment and attempts to make the environment safer have resulted in decreased injuries over time.

Anticyclic Citrullinated Peptide Antibodies 3.1 and Anti-CCP-IgA Are Associated with Increasing Age in Individuals Without Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Objective: We investigated the association of age and anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP) in subjects without rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: Serum was tested for anti-CCP3.1 (IgG/IgA) in 678 first-degree relatives (FDR) of patients with RA and 330 patients with osteoarthritis (OA).

De novo coccidioidomycosis among solid organ transplant recipients 1 or more years after transplant.

Solid organ transplant recipients who contract coccidioidomycosis are at risk for complicated, protracted, disseminated, and severe disease. To date, no studies have described outcomes for patients who develop coccidioidomycosis only after the first posttransplant year. Skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) are commonly encountered by medical students, residents, and trainees. The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) has updated its recommendations regarding SSTI diagnosis and management in June 2014. We assessed knowledge, attitude, and practices toward diagnosis and management of SSTIs using an online survey.

g-FLUA2H: a web-based application to study the dynamics of animal-to-human mutation transmission for influenza viruses.

g-FLUA2H is a web-based application focused on the analysis of the dynamics of influenza virus animal-to-human (A2H) mutation transmissions. The application only requires the viral protein sequences from both the animal and human host populations as input datasets. The comparative analyses between the co-aligned sequences of the two viral populations is based on a sliding window approach of size nine for statistical significance and data application to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and T-cell receptor (TCR) immune response mechanisms.

Serum cobalamin concentrations and small intestinal ultrasound changes in 75 cats with clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease: a retrospective study.

Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate ultrasonographic changes in the small intestine of cats with clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease and low or low-normal serum cobalamin concentrations. Methods Records for client-owned cats presenting to the small animal hospital with signs of gastrointestinal disease and in which serum cobalamin concentrations were measured from 2000-2013 were reviewed. Inclusion criteria were cobalamin concentrations <500 ng/l, abdominal ultrasound within 1 month of cobalamin testing and definitive diagnosis.
