"The chaos of not knowing": Embodied experiences of waiting for public housing redevelopment and relocation.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has instituted several successive programs to redevelop aging and distressed US public housing. The current program, the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, aims not only to redevelop housing but also to improve the health of public housing residents through a whole neighborhood transformation, at the cost of privatizing components of housing. In the present case study, we examine relationships and perceptions about public housing redevelopment and health among residents affected by the Sun Valley Choice Neighborhood Initiative in Denver, Colorado.

Exploring the sugar-sweetened beverage tax (SSBT) pass-through rate in the Irish hospitality sector.

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) supports the use of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes (SSBTs) as a fiscal lever to help reduce sugar consumption and tackle obesity. Obesity is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes. In response to increasing levels of obesity in Ireland, an SSBT was introduced in 2018.

Occupational post-exposure prophylaxis among healthcare workers: a scoping review of factors affecting optimal utilization.

Introduction: Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is an efficacious prevention method when initiated promptly after an HIV exposure. Yet, PEP has been underutilized, even among healthcare workers (HCWs) with occupational exposure in sites with PEP policies and procedures and access to PEP medications. It is important to understand the dynamics of uneven PEP use in what appears to be an optimal context to better protect the health and wellbeing of HCWs.

Safety and Immunogenicity of a 4-Component Generalized Modules for Membrane Antigens Shigella Vaccine in Healthy European Adults: Randomized, Phase 1/2 Study.

Background: We report data from stage 1 of an ongoing 2-staged, phase 1/2 randomized clinical trial with a 4-component generalized modules for membrane antigens-based vaccine against Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri 1b, 2a, and 3a (altSonflex1-2-3; GSK).

Methods: Europeans aged 18-50 years (N = 102) were randomized (2:1) to receive 2 injections of altSonflex1-2-3 or placebo at 3- or 6-month interval. Safety and immunogenicity were assessed at prespecified time points.

The Community As A Full Partner: A New Model For Public Health.

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated a need to strengthen the US public health system by shifting toward much greater community engagement and leadership. In November and December 2023, we conducted separate online surveys of community-based organizations and large metropolitan health departments to identify barriers and opportunities for building a public health system with strong community partnerships. Identified barriers included mistrust, siloed health departments with structural challenges in funding community-based organizations, and insufficient shared decision making.

Transforming Public Health Practice With Generative Artificial Intelligence.

Public health practice appears poised to undergo a transformative shift as a result of the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). These changes will usher in a new era of public health, charged with responding to deficiencies identified during the COVID-19 pandemic and managing investments required to meet the health needs of the twenty-first century. In this Commentary, we explore how AI is being used in public health, and we describe the advanced capabilities of generative AI models capable of producing synthetic content such as images, videos, audio, text, and other digital content.

Gender(ed) science: How the institutionalization of gender continues to shape the conduct and content of women's health research.

Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, and attributes that a particular society considers appropriate for men and women based on assumptions about biological sex. It also operates as a major social organizing principle that confers unequal power, status, and resources to men and women, with direct consequences for health. Historic patriarchal and misogynistic beliefs and values are reinforced through social institutions, including health science, which reify gender inequities.

Social Determinants of Health Documentation in Structured and Unstructured Clinical Data of Patients With Diabetes: Comparative Analysis.

Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) have yet to fully capture social determinants of health (SDOH) due to challenges such as nonexistent or inconsistent data capture tools across clinics, lack of time, and the burden of extra steps for the clinician. However, patient clinical notes (unstructured data) may be a better source of patient-related SDOH information.

Objective: It is unclear how accurately EHR data reflect patients' lived experience of SDOH.

Increasing the meaningful involvement of women in HIV cure-related research: a qualitative interview study in the United States.

Background: Cisgender women represent over half of people living with HIV globally. However, current research efforts toward a cure for HIV focus predominantly on cisgender men. The under-representation of women in HIV cure clinical studies is particularly problematic given data suggesting that sex-dependent phenotypes limit scientific discovery.

Increased neural variability in adolescents with ADHD symptomatology: Evidence from a single-trial EEG study.

Increased intrasubject variability of reaction time (RT) refers to inconsistency in an individual's speed of responding to a task. This increased variability has been suggested as a fundamental feature of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), however, its neural sources are still unclear. In this study, we aimed to examine whether such inconsistency at the behavioral level would be accompanied by inconsistency at the neural level; and whether different types of neural and behavioral variability would be related to ADHD symptomatology.

Prenatal buds of conditional regard and autonomy support: Associations with postnatal parenting and child adjustment.

Toddlerhood is a period where issues of autonomy and control in parent-child relationships become particularly intense. In response to these challenges, some parents adopt controlling practices, whereas others are more autonomy supportive. However, research has yet to examine prenatal orientations that foreshadow specific controlling or autonomy-supportive parental practices in toddlerhood and children's socioemotional functioning.

Postcardiac Surgery Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Patients on Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors.

Objectives: To evaluate sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) use and complications (euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis [eDKA] rate, mortality, infection, hospital, and cardiovascular intensive care unit [CVICU] length of stay [LOS]) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Design: A retrospective study.

Setting: At an academic university hospital.

Neighborhood Walkability, Historical Redlining, and Childhood Obesity in Denver, Colorado.

Childhood obesity is a precursor to future health complications. In adults, neighborhood walkability is inversely associated with obesity prevalence. Recently, it has been shown that current urban walkability has been influenced by historical discriminatory neighborhood disinvestment.

Post-Operative Order Set Decreases Opioid Prescriptions and Increases Efficiency.

Background: Opioid addiction remains a public health crisis. We aimed to create an electronic medical record (EMR) based protocol to decrease post-operative prescribing of opioid medications and streamline the ordering process while maintaining adequate pain control.

Methods: An order set was created to minimize opioid prescriptions.

Willingness of Racially Diverse Young Adults Living with HIV to Participate in HIV Cure Research: A Cross-Sectional Survey in the United States.

Nearly half of new HIV cases in the United States are among youth. Little is known about the willingness of young adults living with HIV (YLWH) to participate in HIV cure-related research. In 2021, we recruited 271 YLWH aged 18-29 for an online survey.
