Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy with significant hypertrophy of the basal septum is the most frequently reported cause of left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. Additionally, other conditions such as dehydration, sepsis, vasodilatation, or mitral valve repair have been associated with LVOT obstruction. In this report, we present a case of a patient without hypertrophy who developed severe dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction during catecholamine stimulation for shock that complicated severe pancreatitis.

Comparison of computer-assisted surgery with conventional technique for the treatment of axial distal phalanx fractures in horses: an in vitro study.

The objective of this study was to establish representative treadmill ground reaction force (GRF) and interlimb co-ordination time data of clinically sound horses at the trot. It was anticipated that these normative standards would provide a reference data base against which lame horses could be compared. GRF-time histories were collected from 30 Warmblood riding horses with easy, wide natural gaits.

Differentiation of HL-60 myeloid leukemia cells induced by all-trans retinoic acid is enhanced in combination with caffeic acid.

We investigated a possible enhancement of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-induced differentiation of HL-60 human myeloid leukemia cells by caffeic acid (CA), a widely distributed plant phenolic compound. Our results showed that CA, in the concentration of 13 or 52 micro M, had no or minimal influence on cell differentiation, whereas the differentiating activity of ATRA was potentiated by CA treatment. We proved, using flow cytometric detection of the CD66b surface molecule, a synergistic effect of CA: at day 10, 18.

Evidence that P36, a human sperm acrosomal antigen involved in the fertilization process is triosephosphate isomerase.

P36 is one of the immunodominant sperm antigens identified by antibodies eluted from the spermatozoa of infertile men. In a previous study, we isolated and characterized this auto-antigen as a glycoprotein with several isoforms. Specific rabbit antibodies were produced to investigate sperm topography and the role of P36 in the fertilization process and we showed that P36 is present on the equatorial segment of acrosome-reacted spermatozoa and is involved in sperm-binding and the penetration of zona-free hamster oocytes.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection involving the left main stem: assessment by intravascular ultrasound.

This case report describes the devastating consequences of spontaneous coronary dissection in a 36 year old female patient who otherwise had a normal coronary arteriogram. Intravascular ultrasound showed coronary artery dissection and intramural haematoma at the left main stem coronary artery. Acute coronary syndrome developed and subsequently surgical revascularisation was performed successfully.

Background: Prosthetic valve endocarditis is a life-threatening complication after valve replacement surgery. Therefore, it is common to perform a screening for potential sources of infection before surgery in order to be able to do a prophylactic treatment.

Patients And Method: The incidence of potential infectious sources of bacteremia in the dental, jaw and nasopharyngeal area was evaluated in 92 patients going to have valve replacement surgery.

An experimental animal model of aseptic loosening of hip prostheses in sheep to study early biochemical changes at the interface membrane.

Background: Aseptic loosening of hip prosthesis as it occurs in clinical cases in human patients was attributed to wear particles of the implants, the response of the tissue dominated by macrophages and the production of inflammatory mediators and matrix degrading enzymes; however, the cascade of events initiating the process and their interaction regarding the time course is still open and discussed controversially. Therefore, the goal of this study was to establish an experimental animal model in sheep allowing to follow the cascade of early mechanical and biochemical events within the interface membrane and study the sequence of how they contribute to the pathological bone resorption necessary for aseptic loosening of the implant.

Methods: A cemented modular system (Biomedtrix) was used as a hip replacement in 24 adult Swiss Alpine sheep, with one group receiving a complete cement mantle as controls (n = 12), and the other group a cement mantle with a standardized, lateral, primary defect in the cement mantle (n = 12).
