Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic spurred a large research effort in Africa, resulting in a bibliometric analysis that examined 1,296 articles published between December 2019 and January 2021, focusing on study design, themes, and author affiliations.
  • Most research articles (46.6%) were primary studies, with common topics including country preparedness (24.9%) and health impacts (21.6%), but only 1% addressed therapeutics and vaccines.
  • The analysis reveals that while many articles had African authors, the research output was uneven across countries, indicating a need for more investment in regions producing less research, especially in areas like vaccine development.
