A systematic literature review was conducted to determine the global status of newborn screening (NBS) for mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) II (Hunter syndrome; OMIM 309900). Electronic databases were searched in July 2023 for articles referencing NBS for lysosomal storage diseases: 53 featured MPS II. Until recently, only Taiwan and two US states (Illinois and Missouri) formally screened newborns for MPS II, although pilot programs have been conducted elsewhere (Japan, New York, and Washington).

Methods: HOS data for male patients (n = 650) aged ≥5 years at latest cognitive assessment with available genetic data were analyzed. Predefined genotype categories were used to classify IDS variants and report phenotypic characteristics by genotype.
Introduction: Rare diseases (RDs) collectively impact over 30 million people in Europe. Most individual conditions have a low prevalence which has resulted in a lack of research and expertise in this field, especially regarding genetic newborn screening (gNBS). There is increasing recognition of the importance of incorporating patients' needs and general public perspectives into the shared decision-making process regarding gNBS.

This analysis of data from the Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS) compared the clinical manifestations and surgical and nonsurgical procedure history in patients with neuronopathic or non-neuronopathic MPS II. Prospective patients were identified in July 2018 in HOS for inclusion in this analysis as those with stable cognitive impairment status as assessed at 10 years of age and at a minimum of one follow-up visit at 11 to <20 years of age.

Despite the rapid advancements in this field, providing a reliable, naturalistic myoelectric prosthesis remains a significant challenge. Other challenges include the limited number of allowed movements, lack of simultaneous, continuous control and the high computational power that could be needed for accurate decoding.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: The ease of use and number of degrees of freedom of current myoelectric hand prostheses is limited by the information content and reliability of the surface electromyography (sEMG) signals used to control them. For example, cross-talk limits the capacity to pick up signals from small or deep muscles, such as the forearm muscles for distal arm amputations, or sites of targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) for proximal amputations. Here we test if signals recorded from the fully implanted, induction-powered wireless Myoplant system allow long-term decoding of continuous as well as discrete movement parameters with better reliability than equivalent sEMG recordings.

Ricin is one of the most potent and lethal substances known, particularly when inhaled. The ease with which the native plant (Ricinus communis) can be obtained and the toxin extracted makes ricin an attractive weapon.

We have examined the effects of acute exposure to PCB mixtures and two single congeners on synaptic transmission between Schaffer collaterals and CA1 neurons of the rat hippocampus as well as posttetanic potentiation (PTP), paired pulse facilitation (PPF), and long-term potentiation (LTP). PTP and PPF represent transient increases in transmitter release immediately after stimulation, while LTP is a measure of long-term changes in synaptic plasticity that has been related to learning and memory.

Serum T3 levels were less than 20% of that of age matched controls after 3 weeks of treatment, and remained at that level. Relative to the age-matched controls, LTP was reduced significantly after 2 weeks of treatment.
