Cultivating Comfort: Examining Participant Satisfaction with Hypnotic Communication Training in Pain Management.

Context: One in four Canadians experiences chronic pain, yet insufficient services and restrictions surrounding prevailing treatments result in inadequate management and significant negative consequences for these individuals. Previous work indicates that hypnotic communication represents a promising complementary treatment; however, training protocols for healthcare professionals are underdeveloped and understudied.

Aim: To evaluate the level of satisfaction for a training program on hypnotic communication in pain management clinics.

Global impacts of marine heatwaves on coastal foundation species.

With increasingly intense marine heatwaves affecting nearshore regions, foundation species are coming under increasing stress. To better understand their impacts, we examine responses of critical, habitat-forming foundation species (macroalgae, seagrass, corals) to marine heatwaves in 1322 shallow coastal areas located across 85 marine ecoregions. We find compelling evidence that intense, summer marine heatwaves play a significant role in the decline of foundation species globally.

Visual impairment, employment status, and reduction in income: the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Objective: To examine the employment status of those with and without visual impairment and eye disease and to examine the association between visual impairment and eye disease and a reduction in income over a 3-year period.

Design: Population-based prospective cohort study.

Participants: A total of 12,174 nonretired participants aged 45-64 years old in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Introduction: Approximately one-quarter of Canadians experience chronic pain, a debilitating condition often necessitating opioid use, which raises concerns regarding dependency and overdose risks. As an alternative, we developed the HYlaDO program (Hypnose de la Douleur, hypnosis of Pain in French), a novel self-hypnosis approach for chronic pain management. The development of this program followed the ORBIT model, a comprehensive framework for designing interventions encompassing several phases ranging from design to efficacy assessment.

Practicing self-hypnosis to reduce chronic pain: A qualitative exploratory study of HYlaDO.

: Nearly a quarter of Canada's population suffers from chronic pain, a long-lasting medical condition marked by physical pain and psychological suffering. Opioids are the primary treatment for pain management in this condition; yet, this approach involves several undesirable side effects. In contrast to this established approach, non-pharmacological interventions, such as medical hypnosis, represent an efficient alternative for pain management in the context of chronic pain.

Perceptions and Preoccupations of Patients and Physicians Regarding Use of Medical Cannabis as an Intervention Against Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: Results from a Qualitative Study.

Objective: Explore perceptions and preoccupations regarding use of medical cannabis against chronic musculoskeletal pain, among patients and physicians.

Design: Qualitative study using interviews with patients and physicians, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).

Setting: The study was conducted in Quebec, Canada, in spring 2020.

Disruption of Bioenergetics in the Intestine of Wistar Rats Caused by Hydrogen Sulfide and Thiosulfate: A Potential Mechanism of Chronic Hemorrhagic Diarrhea in Ethylmalonic Encephalopathy.

Ethylmalonic encephalopathy (EE) is a severe inherited metabolic disorder that causes tissue accumulation of hydrogen sulfide (sulfide) and thiosulfate in patients. Although symptoms are predominantly neurological, chronic hemorrhagic diarrhea associated with intestinal mucosa abnormalities is also commonly observed. Considering that the pathophysiology of intestinal alterations in EE is virtually unknown and that sulfide and thiosulfate are highly reactive molecules, the effects of these metabolites were investigated on bioenergetic production and transfer in the intestine of rats.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health among Patients with Chronic Ocular Conditions.

The COVID-19 pandemic had significant impacts on the mental and visual health of patients. This cross-sectional, survey-based, multicentric study evaluates the state of mental and visual health among patients with chronic ocular diseases such as glaucoma, neovascular age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or chronic uveitis during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health was assessed using three questionnaires: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), and the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (VFQ-25).

Tumor-neutrophil crosstalk promotes and glioblastoma progression.

Introduction: The tumor microenvironment (TME) of glioblastoma (GB) is characterized by an increased infiltration of immunosuppressive cells that attenuate the antitumor immune response. The participation of neutrophils in tumor progression is still controversial and a dual role in the TME has been proposed. In this study, we show that neutrophils are reprogrammed by the tumor to ultimately promote GB progression.

Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived membrane particles: A novel cell-free therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis, are chronic and idiopathic inflammations of the gastrointestinal tract. A disruption of the epithelial barrier and an imbalance between Th1 and Th2 subsets are associated with the onset and progression of these diseases. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) are a promising therapy for IBD.

The Mental Health State of Canadian Ophthalmologists during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Survey-Based Study and Review.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted the practice of medicine, causing stress and uncertainty among ophthalmologists. This cross-sectional, survey-based study of Canadian Ophthalmological Society members ( = 1152) aims to report on Canadian ophthalmologists' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Four questionnaires were administered between December 2020 and May 2021: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), the 7-item Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R).

Although advanced age, male sex, and some comorbidities impact the clinical course of COVID-19, these factors only partially explain the inter-individual variability in disease severity. Some studies have shown that genetic polymorphisms contribute to COVID-19 severity; however, the results are inconclusive. Thus, we investigated the association between polymorphisms in , , , , , , , , and and the clinical course of COVID-19.

Stereopsis provides a constant feed to visual shape representation.

The contribution of stereopsis in human visual shape perception was examined using stimuli with either null, normal, or reversed binocular disparity in an old/new object recognition task. The highest levels of recognition performance were observed with null and normal binocular disparity displays, which did not differ. However, reversed disparity led to significantly worse performance than either of the other display conditions.

The Impact of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells on Neutrophils: A Concise Review.

This review describes the current state of knowledge concerning interactions between mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and neutrophils. MSCs are known as somatic multipotent cells with regenerative and anti-inflammatory abilities and immunomodulatory effects over other immune cells. Several studies reported that MSCs could affect the function and viability of neutrophils in their recruitment, activation, activity, survival, production of reactive oxygen species, phagocytosis capacity, and apoptosis.

Recurrent and De Novo Toxoplasmosis Retinochoroiditis following Coronavirus Disease 2019 Infection or Vaccination.

This study reports three cases of toxoplasmosis retinochoroiditis following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection or vaccination from the national Canadian COVID-19 Eye Registry between December 2020 and September 2021. A 56-year-old male presented 15 days after a positive COVID-19 test with toxoplasmosis retinochoroiditis. He later relapsed 8 days following a first Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine dose.

Definition and refinement of HYlaDO, a self-hypnosis training program for chronic pain management: A qualitative exploratory study.

One in four Canadians is affected by chronic pain, frequently treated with opioids, which present a risk of addiction and overdose. The development of non-pharmacological interventions is therefore crucial. In a pilot project, a self-hypnosis training program showed encouraging results in improving breast cancer patients' quality of life.

The challenges of ethical deliberation in palliative care settings: A descriptive study.

Objective: Inadequate deliberation processes about ethical problems occurring in palliative care settings may negatively impact both patients and healthcare professionals. Better knowledge of the palliative care professionals' practices regarding such processes could help identify specific education needs to improve the quality of palliative care in the context of complex ethical situations. Therefore, this descriptive study aimed to (1) examine ethical deliberation processes in interprofessional teams in five palliative care settings; (2) identify organizational factors that constrain such processes; and (3) based on this knowledge, identify priority education needs for future and current palliative care professionals.

Of these, lipid abnormalities are the least understood. Here, we investigate the role of Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD), a crucial regulator of fatty acid desaturation, in AD pathogenesis.

A rare presentation of endogenous panophthalmitis with optic neuritis and orbital cellulitis from a urinary tract infection.

This case illustrates the rare presentation of endogenous endophthalmitis with concomitant orbital cellulitis from an acute pyelonephritis. A 59-year-old Caucasian female with type 2 diabetes mellitus was transferred from a regional hospital with decreased visual acuity, periorbital edema, photophobia, proptosis and pain of the right eye, as well as suprapubic discomfort. Initial ocular examination and B-scan ultrasonography were consistent with endophthalmitis and orbital cellulitis which lead to a vitreous tap and intravitreal antibiotics injection and systemic antibiotherapy.

Methods: Data came from two waves of a 3-year population-based prospective cohort study (Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging), which consisted of 30,097 randomly selected people aged 45-85 years from 7 Canadian provinces. Visual impairment (VI) was defined as binocular presenting visual acuity worse than 20/40.
