How Latino American and European American adolescents discuss conflicts, sexuality, and AIDS with their mothers.

The authors examined how the structure of mother-adolescent conversations differs by ethnic group, age, and dyadic and individual factors. Mother-adolescent dyads of European or Latino descent participated in conversations and reported on their relationship and AIDS knowledge. Latina American mothers dominated conversations more than European American mothers, independent of socioeconomic status.

The G-protein FlhF has a role in polar flagellar placement and general stress response induction in Pseudomonas putida.

The flhF gene of Pseudomonas putida, which encodes a GTP-binding protein, is part of the flagellar-motility-chemotaxis operon. Its disruption leads to a random flagellar arrangement in the mutant (MK107) and loss of directional motility in contrast to the wild type, which has polar flagella. The return of a normal flhF allele restores polar flagella and normal motility to MK107; its overexpression triples the flagellar number but does not restore directional motility.

The plant ribosome inactivating proteins luffin and saporin are potent inhibitors of HIV-1 integrase.

The ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a group of proteins that are able to inactivate eukaryotic protein synthesis by attacking the 28S ribosomal RNA. Recent studies have shown that some RIPs possess strong anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity. In this study, several common plant RIPs including agrostin, gelonin, luffin, alpha-momorcharin, beta-momorcharin, saporin and trichosanthin were examined for the ability to interfere with HIV-1 replication in a variety of mechanistic assays in vitro.

Radial nerve injury after intravenous cannulation at the wrist--a case report.

Peripheral venous cannulation is one of the commonest procedures performed in hospitals. The dorso-lateral aspect of the wrist is one of the favourite sites. Radial nerve injury, though extremely rare, can be a serious complication and has been reported twice.

Case-control study of risk factors for avian influenza A (H5N1) disease, Hong Kong, 1997.

In May 1997, a 3-year-old boy in Hong Kong died of a respiratory illness related to influenza A (H5N1) virus infection, the first known human case of disease from this virus. An additional 17 cases followed in November and December. A case-control study of 15 of these patients hospitalized for influenza A (H5N1) disease was conducted using controls matched by age, sex, and neighborhood to determine risk factors for disease.

Tissue folate binding protein levels in transgenic mice with tumors and in non-transgenic controls.

Localized folate deficiency may be a risk factor for cancer. Since, folate binding proteins (FBP) and reduced folate carrier proteins (RFC) mediate cellular transport of folate, we compared FBP concentrations in several organs from tumor-bearing transgenic (TBT) mice and tumor-free non-transgenic controls (NTC) of the same strain, age, and fed identical diets. Liver, spleen, brain, small intestine and kidney were individually homogenized in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and separated into membrane, cytoplasmic, mitochondrial/lysomal and nuclear fractions (confirmed with marker enzymes).

Strongyloidiasis as a possible cause of nephrotic syndrome.

Chronic strongyloidiasis is a mild disease and has never been reported to be associated with nephrotic syndrome. Disseminated strongyloidiasis is known to have high mortality, but it frequently is not diagnosed until autopsy. We report a patient with nephrotic syndrome developing disseminated strongyloidiasis after steroid therapy.

A longitudinal study of AIDS conversations between mothers and adolescents.

The current study examined the stability of mother-adolescent AIDS conversations. Twenty-four mother-adolescent dyads (9 boys, 15 girls) participated at Time 1 (adolescents aged 10-14 years), and again 2 years later. Mothers and adolescents engaged in a videotaped conversation about AIDS and completed AIDS questionnaires.

Acute myeloid leukemia following psoralen with ultraviolet A therapy: a fluorescence in situ hybridization study.

A woman with mycosis fungoides treated by psoralen with ultraviolet A (PUVA) and electron beam therapy developed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) three years later. Karyotypic analysis of the leukemia cells revealed monosomy 7. Fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that the monosomy 7 clone had accounted for about a third of the marrow cells after PUVA treatment, but replaced the entire marrow at leukemic transformation.

What word learners do when input contradicts the mutual exclusivity assumption.

In 4 studies, 3- to 5-year-olds heard 2 novel English labels each applied to the same novel object by a different adult. In all 4 studies, about half of the children accepted both labels, suggesting that hearing 2 labels applied to an object offers strong enough evidence for some to override mutual exclusivity. Nonetheless, about half of the children honored mutual exclusivity and hence accepted only 1 label; they also seemed to keep both labels in mind for at least a few minutes and settled on whichever label they re-encountered first.

Modified fracture brace for tibial fracture with varus angulation: a case report.

Sarmiento introduced the functional fracture brace for the management of tibial shaft fracture in 1963. However, tibial angulation with varus deformity cannot be prevented or corrected by such a device. In this paper, a case of tibial shaft fracture with varus angulation treated with a modified below-knee fracture brace was reported.

Routine assessment of patient progress: a multiformat, change-sensitive nurses' instrument for assessing psychotic inpatients.

A new instrument, the Routine Assessment of Patient Progress (RAPP), is a standardized scale with a unique format that allows trained nurses to incorporate both interview and observational data into a comprehensive assessment of psychiatric inpatients. The scale was developed to accurately document treatment effects, assist in treatment planning, and provide ancillary judgments of psychopathology that may affect diagnosis. The RAPP demonstrates satisfactory interrater reliability and internal consistency.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide is a potent calmodulin inhibitor.

We report here that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP38), a new 38-residue neuropeptide of the secretin/glucagon family, is a potent inhibitor of calmodulin in vitro in the activation of bovine brain calmodulin-dependent cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase. The concentration of PACAP38 for half-maximal inhibition of the phosphodiesterase is 15 nM, one of the lowest for known calmodulin inhibitors. In the presence of Ca2+, PACAP38 binds strongly to calmodulin in a 1:1 ratio with a dissociation constant of about 28 nM.

These methods were based on liquid-liquid extraction of I and II from biological matrices, back extraction into acid, and analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection (252 nm). The assays were fully validated in the concentration range of 5 to 500 ng/ml, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for I and II, defined as the lowest concentration on the standard curve for which precision (coefficient of variation, C.

Simultaneous determination of L-693,612, a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, and two potential metabolites in human whole blood by ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography.

A method for the simultaneous determination of a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, L-693,612, and two of its potential metabolites in human whole blood is described. The analytes are isolated from the matrix via liquid-liquid extraction with a mixture of toluene, ethyl acetate and isopropanol (49:50:1, v/v/v). The analytes are then back extracted into dilute phosphoric acid prior to injection into the HPLC system.

Human pharmacokinetics and tolerability of L-697,639, a non-nucleoside HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor.

L-697,639, a potent and selective non-nucleoside inhibitor of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and HIV-1 replication in vitro, was administered to healthy male volunteers to investigate the pharmacokinetics and tolerability of single and multiple oral doses. Single doses ranging from 25 to 500 mg, and multiple doses of up to 100 mg every 12 h for ten days, produced no clinically important adverse events. Dose proportionality with respect to AUC was seen over the range of 25-100 mg administered as a single dose.

Pasteurella multocida meningitis in a two-day old neonate.

A normal full-term baby boy, born by vaginal delivery, became ill on day 2 with fever and failure to feed. CSF examination revealed 260 x 10(6)/l leucocytes, mainly mononuclears, protein 2 g/l and glucose zero. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from the baby's CSF, blood and umbilicus and from the mother's vagina.

Membranous nephropathy related to hepatitis B virus in adults.

Background: The natural course of adult hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related membranous nephropathy in areas where HBV infection is endemic (characterized by vertical and horizontal transmission of HBV in early childhood) has not been fully defined.

Methods: We evaluated the clinical features, pathological findings, serologic profiles, therapeutic responses, and prognoses of 21 patients with adult-onset HBV-related membranous nephropathy. The patients were followed for a mean of 60 months (range, 12 to 108).

Arterial desaturation during induction in healthy adults: should preoxygenation be a routine?

We studied the haemoglobin saturation of one hundred healthy patients equally divided into two groups. Group 1 patients received three minutes of preoxygenation prior to thiopentone induction followed by inhalational anaesthetics. Group 2 patients breathed room air prior to induction.

Acquiring color names via linguistic contrast: the influence of contrasting terms.

Linguistic contrast of the form "It's not X; it's Y" is often used by adults to correct children's naming errors. The present studies examined whether such linguistic contrast could help preschoolers learn a novel color name. In Experiment 1, a novel color term was contrasted only once with 1 or 2 familiar color names.

The principle of mutual exclusivity in word learning: to honor or not to honor?

According to Markman and Wachtel, children assume that nouns pick out mutually exclusive object categories, and so each object should have only one category label. While this assumption can be useful in word learning, it is not entirely reliable. Therefore, children need to learn when to and when not to make this assumption.

Children's use of information in word learning.

Whenever children hear a novel word, the context supplies information about its meaning. One way children may cope with so much information is to use whatever seems to make sense, given their prior knowledge and beliefs, while ignoring or quickly forgetting the rest. This work examined if and how children's beliefs about word meanings may affect their use of contrastive linguistic information in the input in word learning.
