Sepsis is a fatal condition, with an annual incidence of more than 48 million cases as well as 11 million deaths resulting from it. Moreover, sepsis continues to rank as the fifth most prevalent cause of mortality globally. The objective of this study is to investigate if Clemastine (CLM) pretreatment protects against acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) via modulating Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4), Myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MYD-88), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), Bcl-2-associated X (Bax), B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), and caspase-3 signaling pathways.

Background: There is limited data regarding the hazardous effect of gentamicin (GM) on the uterus and whether or not vinpocetine (Vinpo) ameliorates it. The present study aimed to identify the possible protective effect of Vinpo in GM-induced uterine injury in rats.

Methods: Female rats were assorted in control-group, Vinpo-group, GM-group, and Vinpo plus GM group.

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is composed of diverse hematological malignancies caused by dysfunctional stem cells, leading to abnormal hematopoiesis and cytopenia. Approximately 30% of MDS cases progress to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a more aggressive disease. Early detection is crucial to intervene before MDS progresses to AML.

Aim: Sepsis is a serious inflammatory response to infection with an annual incidence rate of >48 million cases and 11 million fatalities worldwide. Furthermore, sepsis remains the world's fifth-greatest cause of death. For the first time, the current study aims to evaluate the possible hepatoprotective benefits of LCZ696, a combination of an angiotensin receptor blocker (valsartan) and a neprilysin inhibitor prodrug (sacubitril), on cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis in rats.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a significant global health issue associated with severe infections and is a leading cause of death; this study explored gabapentin's potential nephroprotective effects in septic rats.
  • The researchers induced sepsis in male Wistar rats via cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and assessed kidney damage through various biochemical and molecular measurements, revealing gabapentin's protective qualities.
  • The results indicated that gabapentin reduced inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress, while improving kidney function and enhancing protective protein levels, suggesting it may mitigate kidney injury related to sepsis via the Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway.

Aim: Cyclophosphamide (CP) is used to treat a variety of cancers and autoimmune illnesses. CP has been found to frequently cause premature ovarian failure (POF). The study's objective was to assess LCZ696's potential for protection against CP-induced POF in a rat model.

Aims: Sepsis is a severe inflammatory response to infection with an incidence rate exceeding 48 million cases and 11 million sepsis-related deaths yearly. Furthermore, sepsis remains the fifth most common cause of death worldwide. The present study aimed to examine, for the first time, the potential hepatoprotective activity of gabapentin on cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis in rats at the molecular level.

Purpose: To evaluate postoperative visual performance and total ocular aberration in cataract patients after implantation of the TECNIS Eyhanceâ„¢ intraocular lens (IOL).

Methods: Our study is a prospective interventional non-comparative study that was conducted on 34 eyes of 17 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and Eyhance IOL implantation. Postoperative corrected and uncorrected near and far visual acuity and total ocular aberration were assessed 3 months after surgery.

Purpose: To compare anatomical outcomes, functional outcomes, and rate of complications of standard scleral buckling (SSB) versus chandelier-assisted scleral buckling (CSB) in phakic eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to either SSB or CSB. Surgical success/failure rate, corrected distance visual acuity, surgical operating time, and rate of intraoperative and postoperative complications including epiretinal membranes by spectral domain optical coherence tomography were compared between groups.

Background And Aim: Bovine papillomaviruses (BPV) are a heterogeneous group of oncoviruses, distributed globally, which produce major economic losses. In the current study, we compared the results of different diagnostic approaches and compared the strains identified in this study with previously characterized strains at local and international levels.

Materials And Methods: Samples of skin warts were collected from five bovines with generalized papillomatosis from two Egyptian provinces, Menya and Ismailia, in 2020.

Purpose: To investigate the long-term effect of scleral buckling on corneal biomechanics and the effect of change of scleral properties on intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements.

Methods: This is a prospective case series, patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment prepared for scleral buckling were included. Goldmann applanation tonometry was used to measure IOP (GAT IOP).

A 3-month-old boy was referred for assessment and management of apparently absent ocular globes. Ocular examination showed small orbits with apparently absent globes, small conjunctival cul-de-sac, shallow fornices, microblepharon and sunken eyelids. Magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit and brain revealed bilateral extreme microphthalmia, replacement of the optic nerves by disorganised rudimentary tissue tufts, hypoplastic orbits and extraocular muscles, an absent septum pellucidum and an absent corpus callosum.

The chemical profiling of the main phytoconstituents of total ethanolic extract (TEE) and its different fractions of leaves was dereplicated using liquid chromatography-high resolution-electrospray ionisation-mass spectrometry (LC-HR-ESI-MS), revealed the presence of various classes of secondary metabolites; eight phenylethanoids, two flavonoidal glycosides and two iridoids. Moreover, the hepatoprotective and nephroprotective activities of the TEE and its different fractions were investigated in carbon tetrachloride (CCl)-intoxicated rats and were compared with those of silymarin-treated group, revealing the highest potency of the EtOAc group, followed by the aqueous one in improving the CCl-induced alterations in several biochemical parameters. Besides, EtOAc and aqueous fractions exhibited the most inhibition of CCl-induced inflammatory mediators and improving the changes in the histopathological structures of the liver and kidney.

Flavanones, a class of flavonoids present in large amounts in fruits and vegetables, have been assayed by LC-MS/MS and derivatization chemistry using d0/d3-labelled derivatized internal standards obtained by simple reaction procedures which involves d0/d3 methoxyamine. The assay method considers 13 flavanones including aglycones, neohesperidosides, rutinosides and 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl derivatives. The strengths of the method consist in a relative short analysis time (16 min) and good repeatability and reproducibility values which are in most cases under 10% (RSD%).

The role of lipase to catalyze hydrolysis and transesterification of triacylglycerols (TAGs) was evaluated in model systems as well as in virgin olive oil. Tandem mass spectrometry was applied in the identification of modified TAGs, ionized by electrospray, formed during the incubation of selected TAGs with mono and di carboxylic acids. The oligomerization of TAGs was observed in authentic olive oil samples and verified in model systems under catalysis exerted by lipase, whose presence in olive oil was already documented.

Four analogues of ochratoxin A (OTA) differing for the aminoacidic moiety were synthesised using ochratoxin α (OTα) as the starting material. The condensation reaction between protected amino acids and OTα, carried out in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC • HCl) and N-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) as coupling agents, followed by deprotection and PTLC purification afforded OTA alanine, leucine, serine and tryptophane analogues in satisfactory yields (33-47%, based on OTα).
