Although several studies have been completed to investigate the effect of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in endometrial cancer with peritoneal metastasis (ECPM), a direct comparison was not performed previously. A meta-analysis was performed to investigate the suspected additional survival benefits of CRS plus HIPEC over CRS only. Twenty-one and ten studies with a total number of 1116 and 152 cases investigating CRS only and CRS plus HIPEC were identified, respectively.

Ten percent of patients with breast cancer, and probably somewhat more in patients with ovarian cancer, have inherited germline DNA mutations in the breast and ovarian cancer genes and . In the remaining cases, the disease is caused by acquired somatic genetic and epigenetic alterations. Targeted therapeutic agents, such as poly ADP-ribose polymerases (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi), have emerged in treating cancers associated with germline mutations since 2014.

In the last decade, the use of immunomodulating treatments (IMT) at integrative oncology providers (IOP) increased. IMTs are used to modulate the tumor microenvironment, which might lead to increased response-to-treatment, and the indication of immune checkpoint inhibitors might also be widened. The efficacy and safety of IMTs in advanced/metastatic gastrointestinal cancers were compared with conventional chemo(radio)therapy (CT).

Article Synopsis
  • - Cancer immunity significantly impacts ovarian cancer outcomes, yet the precise mechanisms remain under-researched.
  • - A study involving 57 advanced ovarian cancer patients revealed that higher counts of CD4 and CD45 immune cells in tumors correlate with longer overall survival (OS).
  • - Analysis also identified 23 important genes linked to immune activity and survival, highlighting the relationship between immune cell presence and gene expression patterns in predicting patient prognosis.

Background: Breast cancer has been categorized into molecular subtypes using immunohistochemical staining (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) since the early 2000s. However, recent research suggests that gene expression testing, specifically Prosigna Prediction Analysis of Microarray 50 (PAM50), provides more accurate classification methods. In this retrospective study, we compared the results of IHC/FISH and PAM50 testing.

The mEHT method uses tissues' thermal and bioelectromagnetic heterogeneity for the selective mechanisms. The success of the therapy for advanced, relapsed, and metastatic aggressive tumors can only be demonstrated by measuring survival time and quality of life (QoL). The complication is that mEHT-treated patients cannot be curatively treated any longer with "gold standards", where the permanent progression of the disease, the refractory, relapsing situation, the organ failure, the worsening of blood counts, etc.

Pulmonary adenocarcinomas (pADCs) with an rearrangement are a rare cancer subtype, necessitating comprehensive molecular investigations to unravel their heterogeneity and improve therapeutic strategies. In this pilot study, we employed spatial transcriptomic (NanoString GeoMx) and proteomic profiling to investigate seven treatment-naïve pADCs with an rearrangement. On each FFPE tumor slide, 12 smaller and 2-6 larger histopathologically annotated regions were selected for transcriptomic and proteomic analysis, respectively.

Reproductive disorders caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus-1 are not yet fully characterized. We report QuPath-based digital image analysis to count inflammatory cells in 141 routinely, and 35 CD163 immunohistochemically stained endometrial slides of vaccinated or unvaccinated pregnant gilts inoculated with a high or low virulent PRRSV-1 strain. To illustrate the superior statistical feasibility of the numerical data determined by digital cell counting, we defined the association between the number of these cells and endometrial, placental, and fetal features.

Background: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare peritoneal condition where mucus-secreting tumorous cells progressively produce a thick, gelatin-like substance. The prognosis of patients with PMP is determined by the degree of cellularity within the mucin (low-grade (LAMN) vs. high-grade (HAMN) histologic features) and by the extent of the disease.

Background: Glioblastoma is one of the most difficult to treat and most aggressive brain tumors, having a poor survival rate. The use of non-invasive modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) and Tumor Treating Fields (TTF) devices has been introduced in the last few decades, both of which having proven anti-tumor effects.

Methods: A meta-analysis of randomized and observational studies about mEHT and TTF was conducted.

Background: Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) molecular subtypes have been primarily characterized based on the expression pattern of the following key transcription regulators: ASCL1 (SCLC-A), NEUROD1 (SCLC-N), POU2F3 (SCLC-P) and YAP1 (SCLC-Y). Here, we investigated the proteomic landscape of these molecular subsets with the aim to identify novel subtype-specific proteins of diagnostic and therapeutic relevance.

Methods: Pellets and cell media of 26 human SCLC cell lines were subjected to label-free shotgun proteomics for large-scale protein identification and quantitation, followed by in-depth bioinformatic analyses.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to segment tumor and normal regions in human breast tissues. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in our society; every eighth woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her life. Histological diagnosis is key in the process where oncotherapy is administered.

Background: Platelet count or complete blood count (CBC)-based ratios including lymphocyte-to-monocyte (LMR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR), hemoglobin-to-platelet (HPR), red blood cell count distribution width-to-platelet (RPR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratio are good predictors of colorectal cancer (CRC) survival. Their change in time is not well documented, however.

Aim: To investigate the effect of longitudinal CBC ratio changes on CRC survival and their possible associations with clinicopathological properties, comorbidities, and anamnestic data.

Background: Mucinous adenocarcinoma is a frequent subtype in colorectal cancer (CRC). A higher initial T-stage, poorer differentiation, worse response to anti-tumor therapies, and shorter survival are characteristic of mucinous CRC. Moreover, the therapeutic benefit of cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) in mucinous CRC has not been significantly investigated.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is often associated with elevated platelet count (> 400 × 10/L), known as thrombocytosis. The role of CD40 ligand (CD40L), a member of the tumor necrosis factor family, is controversial in CRC. Circulating CD40L is higher in CRC, but its relationship with disease staging and local and distant metastasis is not clear.

Cancer-related immunity has been identified as playing a key role in the outcome of colorectal cancer (CRC); however, the exact mechanisms are only partially understood. In this study, we evaluated a total of 242 surgical specimen of CRC patients using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry to evaluate tumor infiltrating immune cells (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD23, CD45 and CD56) and immune checkpoint markers (CTLA-4, PD-L1, PD-1) in systematically selected tumor regions and their corresponding lymph nodes, as well as in liver metastases. Additionally, an immune panel gene expression assay was performed on 12 primary tumors and 12 consecutive liver metastases.
