From classroom to operating room: What attracts medical students to neurosurgery.

Background: The specialties chosen by medical students after graduation are critical to their professional trajectories. This study investigates the perceptions of medical students at Jazan University in southwestern Saudi Arabia toward neurosurgery, focusing on the factors that influence their inclination to pursue this specialty.

Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among 342 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine at Jazan University during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Effectiveness of Virtual Reality on Rehabilitation of Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain Patients.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) is used extensively for musculoskeletal conditions, but its efficacy in chronic low back pain still needs more investigation.

Bilateral traumatic dissections of the cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) are rare complications of polytrauma. A thorough literature review was performed, and data from selected studies were analyzed to assess the trends in clinical presentation, modes of trauma, management protocols, and clinical outcomes. The reported outcomes were categorized and graded into optimal, intermediate, and poor outcomes.

How does vertical laminar fracture impact the decision-making in thoracolumbar fractures? A systematic scoping review and meta-analysis.

Objective: Although vertical laminar fracture (VLF) is generally considered a severity marker for thoracolumbar fractures (TLFs), its exact role in decision-making has never been established. This scoping review aims to synthesize the research on VLF's role in the decision-making of TLFs.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines.

Pediatric retroclival hematomas.

Background: Traumatic retroclival hematomas (RCHs) are infrequent occurrences among the pediatric population. The existing body of research pertaining to these hematomas primarily consists of case reports or small case series, which do not provide adequate guidance for managing this condition.

This knowledge gap becomes even more pronounced given the advent of partial heart transplantation, a procedure designed to implant isolated human heart valves in young patients.

Spontaneous thrombosis of vein of Galen malformation managed with surgical resection: a case‑based review.

Introduction: Vein of Galen malformation (VOGM) is an exceptionally uncommon form of congenital intracranial vascular malformations. It is highly unusual for this lesion to spontaneously thrombose. The clinical presentation of a patient may range from being asymptomatic to critically ill.

Impact of resveratrol-loaded liposomal nanocarriers on heat-stressed broiler chickens: Effects on performance, sirtuin expression, oxidative stress regulators, and muscle building factors.

Climate change is considered to be the primary cause of heat stress (HS) in broiler chickens. Owing to the unique properties of extracted polyphenols, resveratrol-loaded liposomal nanoparticles (Resv-Lipo NPs) were first explored to mitigate the harmful effects of HS. The dietary role of Resv-Lipo NPs in heat-stressed birds was investigated based on their growth performance, antioxidative potential, and the expression of heat shock proteins, sirtuins, antioxidant, immune, and muscle-building related genes.

Types and Sources of Social Support Accessible to University Students with Disabilities in Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

University students with disabilities face an increased risk of experiencing negative implications in educational, psychological, and social spheres during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed at assessing various dimensions of social support and its sources during the COVID-19 pandemic that availed university students with disabilities. This cross-sectional descriptive study collected data from 53 university students with disabilities.

Association between Periodontitis and Diabetes Mellitus in the General Population.

Purpose-: This study aimed to examine the association between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus.

Methods: Participants with natural teeth in one jaw from the Third United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994) were included in this analysis. Participants with moderate (> 4mm attachment loss in ≥ 2 mesial sites or 5mm pocket depth in ≥ 2 mesial sites) or severe (> 6mm attachment loss in ≥ 2 mesial sites and > 5mm pocket depth in ≥ 1 mesial site) periodontitis were classified as having periodontal disease.

Post-traumatic endophthalmitis prophylaxis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Purpose: The goal of this study is to determine if certain aspects of endophthalmitis prophylaxis strategies are superior to others.

Design: This investigation is a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: All studies specifying a type of prophylaxis strategy and resulting rates of endophthalmitis were included.

Background: The treatment of babies with unrepairable heart valve dysfunction remains an unsolved problem because there are no growing heart valve implants. However, orthotopic heart transplants are known to grow with recipients.

Aim: Partial heart transplantation is a new approach to delivering growing heart valve implants, which involves transplantation of the part of the heart containing the valves only.

Management of Low Back Pain in Primary Health-Care Settings: Physician's Awareness and Practices Based on Red Flags.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common health problems. Red flags (RFs) of LBP are risk factors that are reported during clinical assessment to determine serious illness. This study aimed to assess primary health-care physicians' knowledge of and practices for RFs of LBP and identify variables associated with a high level of knowledge and awareness about it.

A SOX17-PDGFB signaling axis regulates aortic root development.

Developmental etiologies causing complex congenital aortic root abnormalities are unknown. Here we show that deletion of Sox17 in aortic root endothelium in mice causes underdeveloped aortic root leading to a bicuspid aortic valve due to the absence of non-coronary leaflet and mispositioned left coronary ostium. The respective defects are associated with reduced proliferation of non-coronary leaflet mesenchyme and aortic root smooth muscle derived from the second heart field cardiomyocytes.

The Impact of Extended E-Learning on Emotional Well-Being of Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Saudi Arabia.

Educational institutions in Saudi Arabia extended e-learning until the third semester of the academic calendar to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection and to achieve 70% inoculation for the Saudi population. This study assesses the impact of extended e-learning and other associated stressors on the emotional health of university students in Saudi Arabia. An online cross-sectional survey collected data between the months of January-March 2021.

Anoctamin 1 and c-Kit immunohistochemical study of interstitial cells of Cajal in the muscularis externa of human gastrointestinal tract.

Background: Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are widely distributed in human gastrointestinal (GI) tract, especially in the layer of muscularis externa between neurons and smooth muscles. They play a very important role of coordination of GI tract motility. The aims of this research were to study the morphology and distribution of ICC in the muscularis externa of the GI tract, using immunohistochemistry staining methods, to determine the distribution of immune reactivity of anoctamin 1 (Ano1) compared with c-Kit, and to determine if Ano1 is a reliable marker for ICC in human GI tract.

Isolated post-traumatic astereognosis: a case-based review.

Introduction: Astereognosis is the tactile inability to recognize objects placed in the palms by touch with the eyes closed or blind-folded in the presence of intact primary sensory modalities. Stereognosis is usually considered a function of the contralateral sensory cerebral cortex. However, lesions of several anatomic areas and pathologic entities have been reported to be associated with astereognosis.

Assessment of novel surgical procedures using decellularised muscle and bioactive ceramic: a histological analysis.

Tissue regeneration and neovascularisation in cases of major bone loss is a challenge in maxillofacial surgery. The hypothesis of the present study is that the addition of resorbable bioactive ceramic Silica Calcium Phosphate Cement (SCPC) to Declluraized Muscle Scaffold (DSM) can expedite bone formation and maturation. Two surgical defect models were created in 18 nude transgenic mice.

Experimental and Numerical Study of the Elastic SCF of Tubular Joints.

This paper provides data on stress concentration factors (SCFs) from experimental measurements on cruciform tubular joints of a chord and brace intersection under axial loading. High-fidelity finite element models were generated and validated against these measurements. Further, the statistical variation and the uncertainty in both experiments and finite element analysis (FEA) are studied, including the effect of finite element modelling of the weld profile, mesh size, element type and the method for deriving the SCF.

The STAR/HOP system: a newly proposed abbreviated descriptive clinical coding system for craniopharyngiomas.

Craniopharyngiomas are complex and challenging tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) which require multidisciplinary and tailored management plans. An extensive variety of clinical presentations, treatment options, and patient outcomes exists. It is crucial to accurately and effectively distinguish the clinical status and the patient's specific roadmap to ensure proper disease status identification, patient-tailored care, follow-up, doctor-doctor and doctor-patient communication, and research.

An extremely rare complete bilateral duplication of inferior vena cava in a male cadaver: anatomy, embryology and clinical relevance.

The study presented an extremely rare case of real complete bilateral duplication of inferior vena cava (IVC) in a male cadaver which has never been reported before. Both IVC had approximately the same diameter. The right IVC drained into the right atrium; the left IVC continued as hemiazygos vein and drained into the superior vena cava.
