A 41 year old woman with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia but no known heart disease received 130 DC shocks for repeated cardiac arrests due to ventricular tachyarrhythmias over 48 hours. She was stabilised by intravenous amiodarone and had a defibrillator implanted. Serial ECGs did not change, but raised troponin I confirmed myocardial infarction as the underlying cause.

In this study, we investigated structural and dynamic changes of sulfogalactosylglycerolipid (SGG) and dimyristoylglycerophosphocholine (DMPC) in a liposomal system (SGG+DMPC, molar ratio 2:3) by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Cooling of the preheated SGG liposomes (5-65 degrees C) revealed that the liquid crystalline-to-gel phase transition was centered at 45 degrees C. SGG+DMPC liposomes showed a single phase transition at 28 degrees C.

In an attempt to improve patient satisfaction during the healing period after placement of implants, mini-transitional implants (MTIs) have been advocated to allow immediate use of temporary dentures and to prevent transmucosal loads over the definitive implants. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an adhesion protein involved in immune and inflammatory cell recruitment and activation. In normal, uninflamed adult rat lung, ICAM-1 is expressed at high levels on type I alveolar epithelial cells and is minimally expressed on type II cells. ICAM-1 expression by alveolar epithelial cells in vitro is a function of the state of cellular differentiation, and is regulated by factors influencing cell shape.

The objective of this study was to investigate the interaction between sulfogalactosylceramide (SGC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) in a mixed model liposomal system (molar ratio SGC:DMPC, 2:3). Structural and dynamic changes of the liposome components were monitored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermotropic FTIR analysis of the mixed liposomes showed a single gel/liquid crystalline phase transition, centered at approximately 42 degrees C.
