The influenza virus PB1 protein functions as a catalytic subunit of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and contains the highly conserved motifs of RNA-dependent RNA polymerases together with putative nucleotide-binding sites. PB1 also binds to viral genomic RNAs and its replicative intermediates through the promoter regions. The detail function and interplay between functional domains are not clarified although a part of structures and functions of PB1 have been clarified.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection impacts the early onset of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).
  • A total of 173 HCC patients were divided into early-onset and late-onset groups, and while certain factors like white blood cell count and alanine aminotransferase levels were linked to early-onset, HBV DNA presence was only significant in patients with higher albumin levels.
  • The findings suggest that occult HBV infection might play a role in accelerating liver cancer development in certain HCV-infected patients, even when HBV DNA was not a generalized risk factor across all patients.

Phlebosclerotic colitis is a rare and recently known disease entity and its etiology is still to be elucidated. Some phlebosclerotic colitis cases are difficult to distinguish from collagenous colitis because of the similarity of pathological findings. In all Japanese case reports of phlebosclerotic colitis in which an association with the use of Chinese herbal medicine is suspected, sansisi (gardenia fruit) was included, suggesting pathogenesis of this disease.

The anti-inflammatory mechanism of prebiotics has recently been shown to have an impact on the host immune system. DHNA from Propionibacterium freudenreichii is known to promote the proliferation of Bifidobacterium and can ameliorate colitis, although its mode of action remains unknown. In this study, we investigated whether DHNA attenuates inflammation in piroxicam-treated IL-10(-/-) mice, particularly focusing on the changes of the host immune mechanism.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data is an invaluable tool in brain morphology research. Here, we propose a novel statistical method for investigating the relationship between clinical characteristics and brain morphology based on three-dimensional MRI data via radial basis function-sparse partial least squares (RBF-sPLS). Our data consisted of MRI image intensities for multimillion voxels in a 3D array along with 73 clinical variables.

Background: Although the incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in Japan has increased, the prevalence of celiac disease is considered very low with the lowest genetic disposition. IBD is reported as the most common comorbidity because of the high positive rate of serological celiac markers. The aim of this study was to examine the current incidence of celiac disease, especially in IBD patients in Japan, where both wheat consumption and incidence of IBD have increased.

The present study aimed to identify genes associated with patient survival to improve our understanding of the underlying biology of gliomas. We investigated whether the expression of genes selected using random survival forests models could be used to define glioma subgroups more objectively than standard pathology. The RNA from 32 non-treated grade 4 gliomas were analyzed using the GeneChip Human Genome U133 Plus 2.

Purpose: Serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images acquired from multisite and multivendor MRI scanners are widely used in measuring longitudinal structural changes in the brain. Precise and accurate measurements are important in understanding the natural progression of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. However, geometric distortions in MRI images decrease the accuracy and precision of volumetric or morphometric measurements.

Article Synopsis
  • A 72-year-old male with jaundice and abdominal pain was diagnosed with IgG4-related autoimmune pancreatitis after blood tests indicated high bilirubin levels and imaging showed irregular pancreatic masses.
  • A total pancreatectomy was performed during surgery after discovering another tumor, with further analysis revealing lymphocyte and IgG4-positive cell infiltration in the pancreas.
  • The case highlights that AIP can create multiple pancreatic lesions, complicating accurate diagnosis, especially in atypical presentations.

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) has a critical role in lymphocyte migration to secondary lymphoid organs. Autotaxin (ATX)/lysophospholipase D, in the vascular endothelium, is the main enzyme involved in LPA production. Whether ATX is involved in pathological lymphocyte migration to the inflamed mucosa has not been studied.

Background: Most deaths of infants with chronic lung disease (CLD) are caused by respiratory failure, unremitting pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) with cor pulmonale, or infection. Although the exact prevalence of PAH in infants with CLD is unknown, infants with CLD and severe PAH have a high mortality rate. Except for oxygen supplementation, no specific interventions have been established as effective in the treatment for PAH in premature infants with CLD.

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is a potent intestinal growth factor derived from enteroendocrine L cells. Although food intake is known to increase GLP-2 secretion, its regulatory mechanisms are largely unknown as a result of its very short half-life in venules. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of luminal nutrients on the stimulation of GLP-2 secretion in vivo using lymph samples and to clarify the involvement of the sweet taste receptor in this process in vitro.

Background: Neutrophil migration, one of the major factors predisposing to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)-induced intestinal lesions, consists of several steps, including interaction with P-selectin from platelets. Cilostazol, a specific phosphodiesterase (PDE)-3 inhibitor, suppresses the expression of P-selectin from platelets and reduces interaction between platelets and leukocytes, leading to inflammatory amelioration in several disease models. We tried to clarify the therapeutic effectiveness of cilostazol for NSAID-induced small intestinal lesions.

De novo-synthesized RNAs are under the regulation of multiple posttranscriptional processes by a variety of RNA-binding proteins. The influenza virus genome consists of single-stranded RNAs and exists as viral ribonucleoprotein (vRNP) complexes. After the replication of vRNP in the nucleus, it is exported to the cytoplasm and then reaches the budding site beneath the cell surface in a process mediated by Rab11a-positive recycling endosomes along microtubules.

Aim:   Dietary habits are involved in the development of chronic inflammation; however, the impact of dietary profiles of hepatitis C virus carriers with persistently normal alanine transaminase levels (HCV-PNALT) remains unclear. The decision-tree algorithm is a data-mining statistical technique, which uncovers meaningful profiles of factors from a data collection. We aimed to investigate dietary profiles associated with HCV-PNALT using a decision-tree algorithm.
