Purpose: This study investigated the clinical features and surgical outcomes of full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs) without focal vitreomacular traction (VMT) and discusses possible underlying mechanisms.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study included patients aged 18 years or older with stage 2 FTMHs who underwent pars plana vitrectomy at three hospitals between December 2016 and March 2024. Patients diagnosed without focal VMT in the macula were classified as VMT- and those with focal VMT were classified as VMT+.

Purpose: To analyze the peak velocity and gain of horizontal saccades in children diagnosed with intermittent exotropia (IXT) and to compare these measurements with those obtained from children without strabismus.

Methods: Participants included children ≤12 years of age with IXT and no history of strabismus surgery and children without strabismus. The peak velocity and gain of horizontal saccades recorded using an eye tracker were analyzed.

Purpose: We investigated the effect of enhanced monofocal intraocular lenses (IOL) (TECNIS Eyhance DIB00V) on retinal sensitivity in glaucoma patients after cataract surgery by comparing results with of such patients implanted with non-enhanced monofocal intraocular lenses (TECNIS ZCB00V).

Patients And Methods: This was a multi-facility retrospective study of glaucoma patients who had undergone cataract surgery. We measured the value of the foveal threshold with a Humphrey visual field analyzer before and after cataract surgery and considered this value to represent the sensitivity of the retina.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to compare the loss of corneal endothelial cells in glaucoma patients who underwent trabeculectomy (Trab) versus Ex-Press surgery (EXP).
  • The research involved analyzing patient data over a three-year period, measuring corneal endothelial cell density (CED) before and after surgery using specialized microscopy.
  • Results showed that EXP surgery led to significantly less cell loss compared to Trab, suggesting that EXP is a safer option in terms of preserving corneal health.

  • The study evaluated eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) by analyzing 27 patients diagnosed at Toyama University Hospital from 2016 to 2022, emphasizing the importance of immunohistochemistry for accurate diagnosis.!
  • Five patients misdiagnosed initially with other cancers (including squamous cell carcinoma) were correctly identified as having SGC through additional immunostaining for adipophilin and androgen receptor.!
  • The research highlights that SGC may be misdiagnosed as other malignancies, and that immunostaining is essential for a definitive diagnosis, particularly in cases of less differentiated cancers like SCC.!

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of vitrectomy with epiretinal proliferation (EP) sparing for full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) accompanied by EP.

Methods: A multicenter, retrospective study. Eyes were divided into two groups: the sparing group (Group S) included eyes in which the EP around the hole was peeled and preserved, whereas the removal group (Group R) included eyes in which the EP was partially or completely removed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the long-term stability of orthodontic tooth movement in the palatal region using 3D digital dental models, comparing these findings to traditional lateral cephalometric analyses.
  • Twenty adult patients were assessed at the beginning of treatment and after at least 5 years, showing minimal changes in the palatal region with an average distance of 0.21 mm over time.
  • The results indicate that 3D digital models provide reliable and accurate measurements for orthodontic assessments, making them a valuable tool for clinical practice without the risks of X-ray exposure.

  • The study aimed to compare corneal endothelial cell (CED) loss after Ex-Press surgery in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) versus pseudo-exfoliation glaucoma (PEX).
  • A total of 119 eyes were analyzed over more than three years to measure CED before and after surgery using noncontact specular microscopy.
  • Results showed that PEX patients experienced a more significant decline in CED compared to POAG patients, with a lower CED survival ratio in the PEX group after three years.

Supplementation with CBM588, a bifidogenic live bacterial product, has been associated with improved clinical outcomes in persons with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) receiving nivolumab and ipilimumab. However, its effect on those receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitor-based combinations is unknown. In this open-label, randomized, investigator-initiated, phase 1 study, 30 participants with locally advanced or mRCC with histological confirmation of clear cell, papillary or sarcomatoid component were randomized in a 2:1 fashion to receive cabozantinib (an inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, MET and AXL) and nivolumab (anti-programmed cell death protein 1) with or without CBM588 as first-line treatment.

Purpose: We treated two patients with ciliary detachment due to an ab interno trabeculotomy. The ciliary detachment was improved by the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF) gas or octafluoro propane (CF) tamponade.

Patients And Methods: Patient 1 was a 52-year-old Brazilian man with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).

This study investigates the change in horizontal saccadic eye movement and smooth pursuit in patients with acquired comitant esotropia (ACE), before and after strabismus surgery. The horizontal saccades and pursuit in 11 patients with ACE were recorded using a video eye-tracker under binocular viewing before and after strabismus surgery. Participants were instructed to fixate on the new target as rapidly as possible when it randomly appeared at either 18.

In patients undergoing haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), the intestinal microbiota plays an important role in prognosis, transplant outcome, and complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Our prior research revealed that patients undergoing HSCT substantially differed from healthy controls. In this retrospective study, we showed that administering Clostridium butyricum MIYAIRI 588 (CBM588) as a live biotherapeutic agent is associated with maintaining intestinal microbiota in the early post-HSCT period.

Background: Patients with only moderate atrial secondary mitral regurgitation (asMR) frequently develop heart failure (HF). Mechanisms of HF with moderate asMR and the impact of mild asMR remain unclarified. Although mild/moderate primary mitral regurgitation is compensated by left ventricular (LV) dilatation, the LV is not dilated in asMR.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have been positioned as a standard of care for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC). A pilot clinical trial has reflected optimistic association between supplementation with MIYAIRI 588 (CBM588) and ICI efficacy in NSCLC. However, it remains to be established whether this biotherapeutic strain may be sufficient to heighten the immunogenicity of the tumor draining lymph nodes to overcome resistance to ICI.

Background: By the time patients with keratoconus are referred to specialists for treatment, the disease-related thinning of their corneas has already made them ineligible (< 400 μm) for corneal crosslinking (CXL).

Purpose: To find basic ophthalmic examination parameters that can ensure proper timing of referral for CXL.

Methods: We reviewed cases referred to Toyama University Hospital for the treatment of keratoconus from August 2011 to May 2021 to identify the frequency of contraindication due to minimal corneal thickness (MCT) < 400 μm at first visit.
