In six patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma, TIL and tumour-draining lymphocytes (TDL) were isolated from primary pancreatic tumour and regional lymph nodes. In comparison with TDL and peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL), TIL contained a comparatively higher percentage of TCR gamma delta+ cells, although they were still a small fraction. By 2 weeks culture with rIL-2 and immobilized OKT-3 antibody, the TCR gamma delta+ cells in TIL were preferentially expanded at the early culture periods, although it was temporary.

A simpler combined drainage operation for a patient with chronic pancreatitis and chronic pseudocyst is described in the following conditions: the pancreatic duct was markedly dilated, the cyst was located directly behind the main pancreatic duct in the head of the pancreas and separate from the duodenum and the cyst caused persistent CBD stricture and cholestasis mainly by its compressive effect. The pancreatic duct was opened anteriorly throughout its length. A second incision was made in the posterior wall of the main pancreatic duct into the cyst and the edge of the opening was sutured for hemostasis.

With an in vitro static system using HUVEC (human umbilical vein-derived endothelial cells) cultured on type I collagen gel, we investigated the transendothelial migration activities of I1-2 activated killer (LAK) cells. Our results indicate that in comparison with unstimulated T cells, LAK cells exhibit strong transendothelial migration activity, as well as increased adhesiveness to HUVEC. Pretreatment of HUVEC for 24 h with rINF-gamma, rTNF-alpha and rIL-1 beta enhanced the LAK cell migration.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was performed in 84 patients with gallbladder stones. The gallstones completely disappeared within 12 months after ESWL, in 31% of the patients with one to three radiolucent stones not larger than 3 cm in diameter and in 57% of the patients with a solitary stone up to 2 cm with the ultrasonographic gallstone pattern of I a or I b. There was no major complication.

Objective: The clinical features of choledocholithiasis were analyzed in cirrhotic patients. The outcomes of surgical treatment and endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) in this situation were compared and the risk factors predictive of an increased mortality rate were identified.

Summary Background Data: In cirrhotic patients, high risk for gallbladder stones in cholecystectomy has been established.

We reviewed thirty cases of hepatic hilar bile duct carcinoma found in 5,800 consecutive autopsy cases, mainly of the aged, and analysed their clinicopathological characteristics. Eleven cases had a record of tumor resection (8 men, 3 women, mean age 75.1 years).

Comparisons were made of therapeutic modalities for gallstones. Four-hundred thirty-five patients with gallstones were operated on with the mortality rate of 0.7%.

Two forms of canine pancreatic kallikrein, designated as canine pancreatic kallikrein A and B, were separately isolated by ion-exchange, affinity and hydrophobic chromatographies. These enzymes had similar apparent molecular masses, substrate specificities and pH optima. However, kallikrein B was inhibited by soybean trypsin inhibitor, while kallikrein A was not.

alpha B-Crystallin specifically decreases in atrophied rat soleus muscle with hindlimb suspension (HS). alpha B-Crystallin cDNA was cloned from rat heart cDNA library using oligonucleotide probe, and its complete coding and partial non-coding regions were sequenced. Northern blot analysis revealed that alpha B-crystallin mRNA in slow muscle decreases at 36 hour after HS but recovered at 24 hour after HS stopped.

Atrophy of rat soleus muscles by hindlimb suspension is characterized by an early dramatic decrease in a soluble 22-kDa protein. The 22-kDa protein was purified from rat red skeletal muscle and rat lens by three different methods of chromatography. The partial amino acid sequence (65% of total amino acids) determined for muscle 22-kDa protein was identical with that of rat lens crystallin.

To improve the detection rate of small pancreatic tumors, it is important to know the characteristic differences in echographic patterns that distinguish small tumors from larger ones. We have studied the echographic patterns of histologically confirmed pancreatic cancers, with special reference to tumor size. The tumor size in 243 cases of adenocarcinoma determined by measurement of the pathological specimen correlated with that determined by ultrasonography.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of high-intensity endurance training on isokinetic muscle power. Six male students majoring in physical-education participated in high intensity endurance training on a cycle ergometer at 90% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) for 7 weeks. The duration of the daily exercise session was set so that the energy expenditure equalled 42 kJ.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical training on the responses of serum adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol concentration during low-intensity prolonged exercise. Five subjects who had fasted for 12 h cycled at the same absolute intensity that elicited 50% of pre-training maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), either until exhaustion or for up to 3 h, before and after 7 weeks of vigorous physical training [mean daily energy consumption during training exercise, 531 kcal (2230 kJ)]. In the pretraining test, serum ACTH and cortisol concentrations did not increase during the early part of the exercise.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the main site of removal of blood lactate and glucose and which is the more important substrate for muscle glycogen resynthesis in rats after short-term strenuous exercise, to exhaustion. Male Wistar rats ran to exhaustion at a speed of 70-100m.min-1.

Oxidation of lactate and glucose was investigated in rats after short-term strenuous running to exhaustion at a speed of 80-110 m.min-1, lasting about 100 sec. Immediately after the exercise, 4 microCi of [U-14C]lactate (LA and AR) or 9.

To examine the possible gender differences in lactate threshold (LT) and respiratory compensation threshold (RCT) and their relations to running performance, ten male and eight female college distance runners performed an incremental running test on the level treadmill. Both groups of runners were matched as closely as possible on the basis of maximal aerobic power relative to lean body mass (VO2.max.

The effects of ovarian hormones on glucose and fatty acid oxidation during exercise were investigated in adult female ovariectomized rats. Rats subdivided into 3 groups received intraperitoneal injections of hormones or sesame oil for 8 days. Estrogen (E) treated rats received 17-beta estradiol in daily doses of 2 micrograms.

Fourteen cases of microcystic adenoma (serous cystadenoma) of the pancreas were reviewed and radiological findings were correlated with pathological specimens. Microcystic adenomas appeared grossly either as solid tumors with innumerable tiny cysts or as honeycombed cystic tumors depending on the size and number of cysts and amount of connective tissue. Dynamic enhanced CT of the tumor reflected the amount of connective tissue and appeared as (a) densely enhanced spongy masses (n = 6: classic appearance); (b) cystic masses with (n = 6) or without (n = 1) enhanced septa; or (c) dense diffusely enhanced mass (n = 1).
