'Zombie drugs': Dehumanising news frames and public stigma towards people who use drugs.

Background: News media is an important determinant of public understanding of drug policy topics. Recent media reporting around the use of synthetic drugs such as xylazine makes frequent use of non-human metaphors, including reference to the effects of 'zombie drugs'. We investigated whether presentation of news stories which included such dehumanising frames were associated with i) increased stigmatising attitudes towards people who use drugs; and ii) lower support for relevant harm reduction programmes.

A pilot, single-blinded, randomized cross-over trial of cramp reduction with angiotensin II in maintenance patients on hemodialysis (The CRAMP-HD study).

Introduction: Angiotensin II may reduce muscle ischemia during intermittent hemodialysis and thereby decrease the incidence and/or intensity of intradialytic muscle cramps. We aimed to test whether angiotensin II infusion during intermittent hemodialysis is safe, feasible, and effective in the attenuation of muscle cramps.

Methods: We performed a pilot, single-blinded, randomized crossover trial of patients receiving intermittent hemodialysis who frequently experience intradialytic muscle cramps.

A precision oncology-focused deep learning framework for personalized selection of cancer therapy.

Precision oncology matches tumors to targeted therapies based on the presence of actionable molecular alterations. However, most tumors lack actionable alterations, restricting treatment options to cytotoxic chemotherapies for which few data-driven prioritization strategies currently exist. Here, we report an integrated computational/experimental treatment selection approach applicable for both chemotherapies and targeted agents irrespective of actionable alterations.

Identifying sex similarities and differences in structure and function of the sinoatrial node in the mouse heart.

Background: The sinoatrial node (SN) generates the heart rate (HR). Its spontaneous activity is regulated by a complex interplay between the modulation by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and intrinsic factors including ion channels in SN cells. However, the systemic and intrinsic regulatory mechanisms are still poorly understood.

Cannabis Use and Trajectories of Depression and Stress Across the Prenatal Period.

Importance: Cannabis use among pregnant individuals has increased. Depression and stress are frequently reported motives for cannabis use that may prolong using cannabis during pregnancy.

Objective: To examine associations between changes in depression, stress, and self-reported prenatal cannabis use (PCU), to examine motives for PCU, and to examine whether trajectories of depression and stress vary across individuals who report using cannabis to cope with mental health symptoms and/or stress, those who use cannabis for other reasons, and those who do not report PCU.

Parkinson's Disease Polygenic Risk Score and Neurological Involvement in Carriers of the FMR1 Premutation Allele: A Case for Genetic Modifier.

Background: Premutation alleles of the FMR1 X-linked gene containing CGG repeat expansions ranging from 55 to 200 are associated with diverse late-onset neurological involvements, including most severe disorder termed Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS). It is intriguing that at least one-third of male, and a much lower than predicted from the X-linkage proportion of female carriers are free of this syndrome. This suggests the existence of secondary genetic factors modifying the risk of neurological involvements in these carriers.

Impact of social context on human facial and gestural emotion expressions.

Humans flexibly adapt expressions of emotional messages when interacting with others. However, detailed information on how specific parts of the face and hands move in socio-emotional contexts is missing. We identified individual gesture and facial movements (through automated face tracking) of  = 80 participants in the UK, produced while watching amusing, fearful, or neutral movie scenes either alone or with a social partner.

A critical review of ultra-violet light emitting diodes as a one water disinfection technology.

UV light emitting diode (LED) disinfection technologies have advanced over the last decade and expanded the design space for applications in point of use, industrial, and now full-scale water treatment. This literature review examines the progression of UV LED technologies from 2007 to 2023 using key features such as total optical power, price, and wall-plug efficiency. The review found that optical power is increasing while the price per Watt is decreasing; however, the wall plug energy (WPE) is slowly improving over the last decade.

Performance of Risk Models for Antimicrobial Resistance in Adult Patients With Sepsis.

Importance: The results of prediction models that stratify patients with sepsis and risk of resistant gram-negative bacilli (GNB) infections inform treatment guidelines. However, these models do not extrapolate well across hospitals.

Objective: To assess whether patient case mix and local prevalence rates of resistance contributed to the variable performance of a general risk stratification GNB sepsis model for community-onset and hospital-onset sepsis across hospitals.

Trigger warnings in medical student education: A scoping review.

Background: Medicine is recognised as a challenging course where exposure to potentially distressing content is inevitable. Some educators provide students with warnings before they encounter potentially upsetting content-trigger warnings. In this scoping review, we mapped the existing literature seeking to better understand how trigger warnings are implemented in medical schools and how they are influencing education within them.

HIV replication and tuberculosis risk among people living with HIV in Europe: A multicohort analysis, 1983-2015.

Introduction: HIV replication leads to a change in lymphocyte phenotypes that impairs immune protection against opportunistic infections. We examined current HIV replication as an independent risk factor for tuberculosis (TB).

Methods: We included people living with HIV from 25 European cohorts 1983-2015.

Application of the estimand framework for an emulated trial using reference based multiple imputation to investigate informative censoring.

Background: The ICH E9 (R1) addendum on Estimands and Sensitivity analysis in Clinical trials proposes a framework for the design and analysis of clinical trials aimed at improving clarity around the definition of the targeted treatment effect (the estimand) of a study.

Methods: We adopt the estimand framework in the context of a study using "trial emulation" to estimate the risk of pneumocystis pneumonia, an opportunistic disease contracted by people living with HIV and AIDS having a weakened immune system, when considering two antibiotic treatment regimes for stopping antibiotic prophylaxis treatment against this disease. A "while on treatment" strategy has been implemented for post-randomisation (intercurrent) events.

Assessing the reach and engagement with the '' mass media campaign on drug-related death prevention in Scotland.

' (HTSAL) was a mass media campaign on drug-related death prevention which ran in Scotland from August 2021 to January 2022. It aimed to increase awareness of how to respond to an opioid overdose, and the uptake of take-home naloxone (THN). The objective of this study was to determine the reach and engagement with the campaign.

Radiosensitizing Effect of PARP Inhibition on Chondrosarcoma and Chondrocyte Cells Is Dependent on Radiation LET.

Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor that forms in bone and cartilage. The primary treatment involves surgical removal of the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue. Especially if complete surgical removal is not possible, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are used in conjunction with surgery, but with a generally low efficiency.

A confounding pediatric spinal cord injury: Anterior, central, or both?

Pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) most commonly affects the cervical region. Central cord syndrome most often occurs in the lower cervical injury due to hyperextension injury, while anterior cord syndrome is primarily due to vascular infarction after hyperextension injury. An unusual case of a pediatric patient who physically presented with central cord syndrome but radiologically had evidence of anterior spinal artery syndrome is described.

Antarctic krill sequester similar amounts of carbon to key coastal blue carbon habitats.

The carbon sequestration potential of open-ocean pelagic ecosystems is vastly under-reported compared to coastal vegetation 'blue carbon' systems. Here we show that just a single pelagic harvested species, Antarctic krill, sequesters a similar amount of carbon through its sinking faecal pellets as marshes, mangroves and seagrass. Due to their massive population biomass, fast-sinking faecal pellets and the modest depths that pellets need to reach to achieve sequestration (mean is 381 m), Antarctic krill faecal pellets sequester 20 MtC per productive season (spring to early Autumn).

Optimum designs for clinical trials in personalized medicine when response variance depends on treatment.

We study optimal designs for clinical trials when the value of the response and its variance depend on treatment and covariates are included in the response model. Such designs are generalizations of Neyman allocation, commonly used in personalized medicine when external factors may have differing effects on the response depending on subgroups of patients. We develop theoretical results for D-, A-, E- and D-optimal designs and construct semidefinite programming (SDP) formulations that support their numerical computation.

Predictors of long-term variability in NE Atlantic plankton communities.

Anthropogenic pressures such as climate change and nutrient pollution are causing rapid changes in the marine environment. The relative influence of drivers of change on the plankton community remains uncertain, and this uncertainty is limiting our understanding of sustainable levels of human pressures. Plankton are the primary energy resource in marine food webs and respond rapidly to environmental changes, representing useful indicators of shifts in ecosystem structure and function.

Understanding time to peak effect of propofol as sole agent on bispectral index in children aged 2-12 years.

Background: The pharmacodynamics of propofol in children have previously been described with the proprietary bispectral index (BIS) as an effect-site marker, and it has been suggested that the rate of onset of propofol might be age dependent, that is, a shorter time to peak effect in younger children. However, these analyses were potentially confounded by co-administered drugs, in particular opioids and benzodiazepines. Thus, the goal of this prospective study was to characterize the influence of age and weight on the onset of hypnotic effects from propofol, reflected by the time to peak of propofol effect-site concentration in the absence of additional drugs.
