Objective: The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway is an important signaling mechanism for cell proliferation and metabolism. Mutations that activate PIK3CA may make cells p110α dependent, but when phosphatase tensin homolog (PTEN) is lost, the p110β isoform of PI3Ks becomes more important. However, the exact mechanism underlying the prevalence of p110s remains unclear.

This study aims to develop an automated method for classifying third molar development stages using OPGs. Initially, our data consisted of 3422 OPG images, each classified and curated by expert evaluators.

In this article, we propose a set of transform-based neural network layers as an alternative to the 3 x 3 Conv2D layers in convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The proposed layers can be implemented based on orthogonal transforms, such as the discrete cosine transform (DCT), Hadamard transform (HT), and biorthogonal block wavelet transform (BWT). Furthermore, by taking advantage of the convolution theorems, convolutional filtering operations are performed in the transform domain using elementwise multiplications.

Purpose: The aim is to identify critical morphological features in postcircumpubertal Cl III treatment and appraise the predictive ability of innovative machine learning (ML) algorithms for adult Cl III malocclusion treatment planning.
Study Design: The Orthodontics Department at the University of Illinois Chicago undertook a retrospective cross-sectional study analyzing Cl III malocclusion cases (2003-2020) through dental records and pretreatment lateral cephalograms.
Background: Available guidelines describing the procedural treatment of thrombosed external hemorrhoids (TEH) rely solely on expert opinion. We aimed to compare local excision (LE) and thrombectomy (incision) in terms of treatment success, factors affecting success, and outcomes.
Methods: This was a multicenter, prospective, observational study conducted in eight centers from September 2020 to September 2021.
Background: Heterologous COVID-19 booster vaccination is an alternative strategy to homologous vaccination, especially in developing countries, due to shortages, delays, or unequal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. We compared cohorts vaccinated with different vaccine combinations to investigate whether a heterologous booster dose of mRNA-based BNT162b2 vaccine boosts the immune response in individuals primed with the CoronaVac vaccine.
Methods: Anti-RBD IgG is generally measured 4 weeks after primary immunization and 4 weeks after booster vaccination.
Introduction: Laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy (LSTC) is a bailout procedure that is undertaken when it is not safe to proceed with a laparoscopic total cholecystectomy owing to dense adhesions in Calot's triangle. The main aim of this review was to investigate the early (≤30 days) and late (>30 days) morbidity and mortality of LSTC.
Methods: A literature search of the PubMed (MEDLINE), Google Scholar™ and Embase databases was conducted to identify all studies on LSTC published between 1985 and December 2020.
Background: Medical workers, including surgical professionals working in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treating hospitals, were under enormous stress during the pandemic. This global study investigated factors endowing COVID-19 amongst surgical professionals and students.
Methods: This global cross-sectional survey was made live on February 18, 2021 and closed for analysis on March 13, 2021.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare condition. It is still unknown if children who have recovered from MIS-C are at a risk of recurrence of MIS-C when they are reinfected with SARSCoV-2. In this study, we aimed to report 2 children who recovered from MIS-C and reinfected with SARSCoV-2 without recurrence of MIS-C.

A parallel structured deep convolutional neural network (CNN) with a pre-processing layer that takes X-ray images and the age as the input is proposed.
Methods: A total of 1018 cephalometric radiographs were labelled and classified according to the CVM stages.

Ovarian germ cell tumours constitute 5% of all ovarian cancers. During the natural course and treatment of these tumours , there may be more unusual cases. One of them is gliomatosis peritonei, which is characterised by the spread of glial cells on the peritoneal surfaces, while the other one is growing teratoma syndrome characterised by the rapid growth of benign component and loss or shrinkage of the malignant component in response to systemic chemotherapy during the treatment of germ cell tumours.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTonsillar squamous cell carcinoma is a subtype of head and neck cancer that rarely metastasizes to the colorectal system. Colonic metastasis secondary to primary tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma is a very rare clinical occurrence with unclear pathogenesis. Palliative chemo-radiation and surgery are recommended for this rare condition, which is generally seen in advanced stages.

We propose an innovative custom-designed deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a built-in set of novel directional filters that highlight the edges of the Cervical Vertebrae in X-ray images.
Methods: A total of 1018 Cephalometric radiographs were labeled and classified according to the Cervical Vertebrae Maturation (CVM) stages.
Background: The objectives of the study were to investigate the organizational characteristics of acute care facilities worldwide in preventing and managing infections in surgery; assess participants' perception regarding infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, antibiotic prescribing practices, and source control; describe awareness about the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and IPC measures; and determine the role of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic on said awareness.
Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted contacting 1432 health care workers (HCWs) belonging to a mailing list provided by the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery. The self-administered questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary team.
Background: Health care workers, including surgical professionals, experienced psychological burnout and physical harm during the coronavirus 2019 pandemic. This global survey investigated the coronavirus 2019 pandemic impact on psychological and physical health.
Methods: We conducted a global cross-sectional survey between February 18, 2021 and March 13, 2021.

Background: Many studies have shown that COVID-19 can progress with coagulopathy and multisystemic thrombotic events. We report a patient who presented with abdominal pain after COVID-19 and was found to have splenic infarction (SI) concomitant with acute myocardial infarctus (MI) under anticoagulant treatment.
Case Presentation: A 45-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with left-sided abdominal pain radiating through to his back persisting for one day.

Introduction And Importance: Various methods have been described in the repair of ureteral defects. Here, it is aimed to present the repair performed with appendiceal interposition without any double J stent for the left ureteral defect in a patient who was operated on urgently due to obstruction with metastatic and locally advanced colon tumor.
Case Presentation: An 82-year-old male patient was taken to an emergency operation with the diagnosis of ileus.
Background: There are data on the safety of cancer surgery and the efficacy of preventive strategies on the prevention of postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 in these patients. But there is little such data for any elective surgery. The main objectives of this study were to examine the safety of bariatric surgery (BS) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to determine the efficacy of perioperative COVID-19 protective strategies on postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 rates.
