Article Synopsis
  • MicroRNAs play a crucial role in regulating gene expression and are linked to various diseases, prompting a study to find specific serum miRNAs associated with prediabetes in patients with alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS).
  • Researchers compared serum samples from ADS patients (both with and without prediabetes) to healthy controls and validated their findings using RT-qPCR and pathway analyses.
  • The study identified significantly different expressions of numerous miRNAs, with hsa-miR-320b and hsa-miR-3135b being particularly notable as potential biomarkers for diagnosing prediabetes in ADS patients.

Background: Fasting is practiced by various religions in the world. The previous studies show the effect of fasting on biochemical markers in healthy subjects; however, no study is available on its effect on gene expression or epigenetic markers. In the present study, miR126, a microRNA, was measured in serum samples of healthy adult subjects, and their correlation with biochemical profile was carried out during the short-term fasting of the Navratri festival.
