Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) approach on the outcomes of patients who underwent pneumonectomy.

Methods: The effect of the surgical approach on perioperative complications and survival in patients who underwent pneumonectomy for nonmetastatic non-small cell lung cancer across 3 institutions (2000-2016) was assessed using multivariable logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards analysis, and propensity-score matching. Completion pneumonectomies were excluded from this study, and an "intent-to-treat" analysis was performed.

Background: As screening for lung cancer rises, an increase in the diagnosis of early stage lung cancers is expected. Lobectomy remains the standard treatment, but there are alternatives, consideration of which requires an estimation of the risk of surgery. Sarcopenia, irrespective of body mass index, confers a worse prognosis in many groups of patients including those undergoing surgery.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established treatment modality for non-small cell lung cancer. Phototoxicity, the primary adverse event, is expected to be minimized with the introduction of new photosensitizers that have shown promising results in phase I and II clinical studies. Early-stage and superficial endobronchial lesions less than 1 cm in thickness can be effectively treated with external light sources.
