Risk factors for brucellosis in Samarqand Oblast, Uzbekistan.

Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the potential risk factors for human brucellosis infection in Samarqand, Uzbekistan.

Methods: Clinically identified cases admitted to different hospitals during 2004-2006 (N=144), and age-, sex- and residence-matched control patients (N=288) with other unrelated conditions, were included in this study. Structured questionnaires were completed and consent forms signed.

The case of a 42-year-old man, originally seen in the Ophthalmology clinic after his wife noticed his pupil sizes were different, is presented. He had been feeling tired with lack of energy for 6 months, during which time he had lost about 6.4 kg in weight.

Doppler-derived indexes and B-type natriuretic peptide in prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in essential hypertension: a prospective study.

Background: Onset of atrial fibrillation in hypertensive patients is usually associated with a high occurrence of cardiovascular complications. Despite its leading importance as a highly prevalent and modifiable risk factor, only a few data are available regarding the predictors of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) in hypertensive patients.

Objectives: This study was undertaken to determine if PAF could be predicted in hypertensive patients while in sinus rhythm using Doppler-derived indexes and the plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentration.

Behavioral-based educational intervention directed toward Egyptian agricultural families to protect children from pesticide exposure.

Culturally appropriate educational intervention was developed and directed toward agricultural families to improve knowledge and practice of agricultural families in order to protect their children from exposure to pesticides. Parents (n = 297) were randomly assigned into either lecture or video training group. Ability to recall information or improve practices among parents was evaluated in three consecutive sessions (2 weeks and 1 month apart).

Montelukast-associated Churg-Strauss syndrome.

A 68-year-old asthmatic presented markedly unwell with arthralgia, mononeuritis multiplex, peripheral neuropathy, and eosinophilia. His past medical history included perennial rhinitis, and nasal polyps. Three months prior to admission his prednisolone was stopped and Montelukast was started.
