Differences in Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy Susceptibility Between Two Sprague Dawley Rat Vendors: A Comparison of Retinal Transcriptomes.

Purpose: To determine the retinal transcriptomic differences underlying the oxygen-induced retinopathy phenotypes between Sprague Dawley rat pups from two commonly used commercial vendors. This will allow us to discover genes and pathways that may be related to differences in disease severity in similarly aged premature babies and suggest possible new treatment approaches.

Methods: We analyzed retinal vascular morphometry and transcriptomes from Sprague Dawley rat pups from Charles River Laboratories and Envigo (previously Harlan).

CSF leak after pediatric endoscopic endonasal expanded approaches: a series review.

Purpose: Endoscopic endonasal approaches in the pediatric population pose specific challenges. Management of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid [CSF] leak is probably the major concern. The purpose of the present investigation is to describe and analyze the incidence of postoperative CSF leaks in our pediatric series of endoscopic endonasal approaches.

Impact of cytomegalovirus immunodominant HLA-I donor-recipient matching on the incidence and features of virus DNAemia and virus-specific T-cell immune reconstitution in unmanipulated haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Background: We investigated whether donor-recipient mismatch involving one or more cytomegalovirus (CMV) immunodominant (ID) human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-I alleles may impact on the degree of CMV pp65/immediate-early 1 (IE-1) T-cell reconstitution and the incidence of CMV DNAemia in patients undergoing unmanipulated haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with high-dose posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PT/Cy-haplo).

Methods: Multicenter observational study including 106 consecutive adult PT/Cy-haplo patients (34 CMV ID HLA-I matched and 72 mismatched). A real-time PCR was used for plasma CMV DNA load monitoring.

Suitability of two rapid lateral flow immunochromatographic assays for predicting SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing activity of sera.

Assessment of commercial severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) immunoassays for their capacity to provide reliable information on sera neutralizing activity is an emerging need. We evaluated the performance of two commercially available lateral flow immunochromatographic assays (LFIC; Wondfo SARS-CoV-2 Antibody test and the INNOVITA 2019-nCoV Ab test) in comparison with a SARS-CoV-2 neutralization pseudotyped assay for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnosis in hospitalized patients and investigate whether the intensity of the test band in LFIC associates with neutralizing antibody (NtAb) titers. Ninety sera were included from 51 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19.

Fractal Self-Structure and Psychological Resilience.

Since the mid 1980's, mainstream social psychology investigations of self-complexity and psychopathology have produced contradictory results. These results are likely the result of a lack of theoretical and methodological grounding in complexity theory. The current study proposes that the self has an interconnected fractal structure, and that this structure may be reflected within inverse-power law (IPL) distributions of response times to self-related questions.

Integrated surveillance of pulmonary tuberculosis and paragonimiasis in Zamboanga del Norte, the Philippines.

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and paragonimiasis remain as health problems in certain areas in the Philippines. Transvaginal endometrial sonography in postmenopausal women taking tamoxifen.

Objective: To evaluate sonographic measurements of endometrial thickness in postmenopausal women taking adjuvant tamoxifen therapy for breast cancer, and to correlate sonographic and pathologic findings to symptoms and duration of tamoxifen therapy.

Methods: Medical records and sonograms of 80 postmenopausal women treated for breast cancer with adjuvant tamoxifen therapy were reviewed retrospectively. Endometrial thickness was recorded as a single-layer thickness and considered abnormal when greater than 2.

The in vitro anti-HIV efficacy of negatively charged human serum albumin is antagonized by heparin.

Succinylated human serum albumin (Suc-HSA) was synthesized by treating human serum albumin with succinic anhydride. Among similar proteins and neo(glyco)proteins tested, Suc-HSA exhibits a pronounced net negative charge, a feature that largely contributes to its efficacy against replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). To assess further the antiviral effect of Suc-HSA, the effect on HIV-1 replication was studied in the presence of whole human plasma.

Simultaneous primary lung sarcoma and carcinoma.

Synchronous primary lung tumors are uncommon, and primary lung sarcomas are especially rare. We report an unusual case of a poorly differentiated carcinoma and a primary sarcoma of the lung. The surgical approach to patients with synchronous primary lung tumors should be aggressive.

The effect of combinations of ampligen and zidovudine or dideoxyinosine against human immunodeficiency viruses in vitro.

The combinations of ampligen and zidovudine at ratios of 100:1, 25:1, 10:1, and 1:50 acted synergistically to reduce cytopathology caused by HIV in MT-2 cell cultures. Combination indices were less than 1 at all of these ratios representing different combinations of concentrations and at 3 effective doses (ED30, ED50, ED70). Combination of drugs which show synergism at a wide range of ratios of combinations suggest that they may be useful clinically, and that the antiviral efficacy of ZDV may be increased in combination with ampligen.

Abdominal manifestations of actinomycosis in IUD users.

The use of an intrauterine device (IUD) is associated with the presence of actinomyces in the female genital tract. Since IUD use is currently so prevalent, IUD-related pelvic inflammatory disease occasionally spreads to the rest of the abdomen. Two patients with abdominal actinomycosis in association with an IUD illustrate the problem; we review the general problem.
