Zinc Ameliorates Acrylamide-Induced Cognitive Impairment in Male Wistar Rats: Modulation of Oxidative Stress, Neuro-inflammation, and Neurotrophic Pathways.

This study investigated the neuromodulatory potential of zinc against acrylamide-induced cognitive impairment. Acrylamide (AA), a toxic substance commonly found in certain foods such as potato, grains and coffee, is known to cause neurological damage and severe cognitive decline. Twenty (20) male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 5) by random selection.

Coffee and Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease marked by dopaminergic neuronal loss and misfolded alpha-synuclein (α-syn) accumulation, which results in both motor and cognitive symptoms. Its occurrence grows with age, with a larger prevalence among males. Despite substantial study, effective medicines to reduce or stop the progression of diseases remain elusive.

Neuroprotective Effects of Virgin Coconut Oil Supplemented Diet against Sodium Benzoate-induced Acetylcholinesterase Dysfunction and Cognitive Impairment: Role of Nrf2/NfKb Signaling Pathway.

The effect of virgin coconut oil (VCO) supplemented diet on sodium benzoate (SB) - induced neurotoxicity in male Wistar rats was investigated. Twenty (20) male Wistar rats weighing 160-180g were divided into four (4) groups: Control which received 1ml of normal saline, SB-treated; received 200 mg/kg b.w, SB + Low Dose VCO-treated (SB + 5% VCO mixed with 95g of rat chow), and SB + High Dose VCO-treated (SB+ 15% VCO mixed with 85g of rat chow).

Mercury chloride causes cognitive impairment, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in male Wistar rats: The potential protective effect of 6-gingerol-rich fraction of Zingiber officinale via regulation of antioxidant defence system and reversal of pro-inflammatory markers increase.

This study investigated the effects of 6-gingerol-rich fraction of Zingiber officinale (6-GIRIFZO) on mercury chloride (HgCl)-induced neurotoxicity in Wistar rats. Thirty -five male Wistar rats weighing between (150-200 g) were divided randomly into five groups (n = 7): group 1: control, received 0.5 mL of normal saline, group 2: received HgCl (5 mg/kg), group 3: received N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (50 mg/kg) as well as HgCl (5 mg/kg), group 4: received 6-GIRIFZO (100 mg/kg) and HgCl (5 mg/kg), group 5: had 6-GIRIFZO (200 mg/kg) and HgCl (5 mg/kg), consecutively for 14 days.

Synergistic Action of Virgin Coconut Oil and Clomiphene in Reversing Endocrine Dysregulation in Letrozole-Model of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in Rats: Role of Nrf2/HMOX-1 Pathway.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder in women's reproductive age. Currently, the pathophysiology of PCOS is unclear, and the limited treatment options are unsatisfactory. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is functional food oil associated with pharmacological effects in reproductive disorders.

Sodium benzoate (SB) is a commonly-used food preservative, with a controversial report to its neurological benefit and toxicity. Zinc (Zn) is a trace element that plays a crucial role in memory, inflammation and oxidative stress. This study was to investigate the effect of SB on rat cognition and memory and the possible modulatory effect of Zn supplement.

Radiological consequence analysis for hypothetical accidental release from Nigerian Research Reactor-1.

Radiological dispersion study is a key element in safety analysis report (SAR) of every nuclear facility for the purpose of emergency response planning. In this work, computational approach was used to determine the total effective dose and ground deposition at critical positions onsite and offsite of the Nigerian Research Reactor-1 (NIRR-1) facility which will be useful in the ongoing development of final SAR for NIRR-1 Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) core. In the methodology used, NIRR-1 LEU core was depleted with TRITON module of SCALE 6.

Adiposity Measures in Metabolic Syndrome among Hausas in Kano, Northern Nigeria.

Ethnic variations exist in the relationship of adiposity indices with metabolic syndrome (MetS).  There are however, limited studies on the usefulness of body adiposity index (BAI) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) among Hausas of Kano, Northern Nigeria.  The aim of the study was to determine the relationship of measures of adiposity to the components of MetS in Hausas of Kano.
