Macroautophagy is a cellular quality-control process that degrades proteins, protein aggregates and damaged organelles. Autophagy plays a fundamental role in cancer where, in the presence of stressors (for example, nutrient starvation, hypoxia, mechanical pressure), tumor cells activate it to degrade intracellular substrates and provide energy. Cell-autonomous autophagy in tumor cells and cell-nonautonomous autophagy in the tumor microenvironment and in the host converge on mechanisms that modulate metabolic fitness, DNA integrity and immune escape and, consequently, support tumor growth.

Article Synopsis
  • Recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection causes significant health issues in the U.S., and RBX2660, a live biotherapeutic made from human stool, is being researched to reduce these infections.
  • In a phase III clinical trial, adults with prior C. difficile infections were randomly given either RBX2660 or a placebo, focusing on the absence of infection symptoms within eight weeks as the main success measure.
  • Results showed RBX2660 had a treatment success rate of 70.6% compared to 57.5% for placebo, and while it was generally well tolerated, it had a slightly higher incidence of mild gastrointestinal side effects.

KRAS mutants are common in many cancers and wild-type KRAS is essential in development as its absence causes embryonic lethality. Despite this critical role in development and disease, the normal expression pattern of KRAS protein is still largely unknown at the tissue level due to the lack of valid antibodies. To address this issue, we used the mouse model in which the Citrine-KRAS (Cit-K) fusion protein functions as a validated surrogate of endogenous KRAS protein that can be detected on tissue sections by immunolabeling with a GFP antibody.

Introduction: Modern laboratory techniques cannot differentiate between colonization and infection; therefore, testing must be indicated clinically. To reduce hospital-onset of infections (HO-CDI), Ascension Via Christi Hospitals (AVCH) in Wichita intervened in three stages by introducing: 1) a testing algorithm; 2) an electronic medical record (EMR)-based decision support system to enforce said algorithm; and 3) phone calls from the infection prevention department to providers to discontinue tests not collected within 24 hours of the order. The goal of this study was to determine if these interventions improved the HO-CDI rate.

Global COVID-19 pandemic containment necessitates understanding the risk of hesitance or resistance to vaccine uptake in different populations. The Middle East and North Africa currently lack vital representative vaccine hesitancy data. We conducted the first representative national phone survey among the adult population of Qatar, between December 2020 and January 2021, to estimate the prevalence and identify potential determinants of vaccine willingness: acceptance (strongly agree), resistance (strongly disagree), and hesitance (somewhat agree, neutral, somewhat disagree).
