The impact of cardiac and cerebrovascular events during COVID-19 hospitalization on long-term prognosis remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the effect of myocardial infarction (MI), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and pulmonary embolism (PE) during hospitalization on the long-term prognosis in patients who survived COVID-19 hospitalization. A retrospective observational analysis was performed on a cohort of 2,389 patients who survived COVID-19 hospitalization in our institution between January and June 2020.

They act as microbial sensors, playing major roles in the regulation of the innate immune system. TLRs mediate their cellular functions through the activation of MyD88-dependent or MyD88-independent signaling pathways.

We described the case of a 35-year-old male who presented to our hospital with shortness of breath 7 years after sustaining blunt chest trauma associated with a motorcycle accident. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram detected severe AR with two separate jets.

In recent years, 3D cell growth culture conditions have been developed to establish intestinal organoids from isolated crypts, which mimic the intestine's cell composition and organization. Organoids, isolated from normal or diseased tissues, can be used to compare cell distribution and differentiation, signaling pathways, and cell responses to pharmacological agents, therapeutic drugs, endogenous or exogenous metabolites, and environmental stresses, among others.

Genome-wide association studies show that many IBD genetic susceptibility loci map to immune function genes and compelling evidence indicate that environmental factors play a critical role in IBD pathogenesis. Clinical and experimental evidence implicate the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-15 in the pathogenesis of IBD.

Little is known about the prevalence of subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD) and corresponding ischemia in this patient population. The study objectives are: (1) to characterize the prevalence of silent CAD in marathoners ≥ 40 years old using cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCT); and (2) if subclinical CAD was detected, to determine the functional significance of occult lesions by stress echocardiography (SE).

In this study, proteome and transcriptome analysis revealed the importance of signaling pathways induced upon genetic IEC- and deletion. Indeed, Gene Ontology biological process analysis of enriched deficient IEC RNA and proteins identified common pathways, including lipid metabolic and oxidation-reduction process, cell adhesion, and antigen processing and presentation, related to immune responses, correlating with dysregulation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II genes.

Over the past 2 decades, pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) have been shown to be on the front line of many illnesses such as autoimmune, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative diseases as well as allergies and cancer. Among PRRs, toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the most studied family. Dissecting TLRs signaling turned out to be advantageous to elaborate efficient treatments to cure autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disorders.

Objective: We evaluated whether dairy protein products modulated gut microbiota and cardiometabolic features in mouse models of diet-induced obesity and CVD.
Methods: Eight-week-old C57BL/6J wild-type (WT) and LDLr-/-ApoB100/100 (LRKO) male mice were fed for 12 and 24 wk, respectively, with a high-fat/high-sucrose diet [66% kcal lipids, 22% kcal carbohydrates (100% sucrose), 12% kcal proteins].
Background: Renal tumor biopsies (RTB) have been proposed as a means to diminish overtreatment of small renal masses. A potential concern of RTB is tumor seeding along the biopsy tract leading to worse clinical outcomes.
Objectives: To evaluate whether RTB was associated with greater upstaging to pT3a compared to patients without a biopsy and to determine if pathologic upstaging affects the risk of recurrence.
Background: Although the combination of doxorubicin (DOX) and trastuzumab (TRZ) reduces the progression and recurrence of breast cancer, these anticancer drugs are associated with significant cardiotoxic side effects.
Objective: We investigated whether prophylactic administration of flaxseed (FLX) and its bioactive components, α-linolenic acid (ALA) and secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), would be cardioprotective against DOX + TRZ-mediated cardiotoxicity in a chronic in vivo female murine model.
Methods: Wild-type C57BL/6 female mice (10-12 wk old) received daily prophylactic treatment with one of the following diets: 1) regular control (RC) semi-purified diet; 2) 10% FLX diet; 3) 4.
Background: Introducing complementary foods other than breastmilk or formula acutely changes the infant gut microbiota composition. However, it is unknown whether the timing of introduction to complementary foods (early vs. late) in infancy is associated with early childhood gut microbiota and BMI, and if these associations depend on breastfeeding duration.

Although extracellular matrix (ECM) biomarkers, including matrix metalloproteinases, are overexpressed in HCM patients, they do not correlate with sudden cardiac death (SCD) risk. The objective of this study was to determine whether scleraxis, a transcription factor that regulates collagen gene expression, is detectable in HCM patients and correlates with disease burden.

Background: IHCA is a major public health concern with increased patient morbidity and mortality. A proportion of all IHCAs occurs in the CCL.

Although previous echocardiographic studies in AN patients have demonstrated a reduction in overall left ventricular (LV) mass, systolic dysfunction, and silent pericardial effusions, little is known about the role of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in assessing this patient population. The objective of this study was to assess cardiac indices and the presence of myocardial fibrosis in AN patients.

Several histone deacetylase inhibitors, either endogenous to the cell, such as the ketogenic β-hydroxybutyrate metabolite, or exogenous, such as butyrate, a microbial-derived metabolite, regulate HDAC activity. Different combinations of intestinal epithelial cell (IEC)-specific Hdac1 and/or Hdac2 deletion differentially alter mucosal homeostasis in mice.

Two types of targeted systemic therapies currently in use for colorectal cancer (CRC) and renal cell cancer (RCC), respectively, include the vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor bevacizumab (BVZ) and the tyrosine kinase inhibitor sunitinib (SNT). Despite the beneficial effects of BVZ and SNT in improving clinical outcomes in the settings of CRC and RCC, there is an increased risk of cardiac dysfunction.

We found that exercise provided cognitive benefit to 5×FAD mice, a mouse model of AD, by inducing AHN and elevating levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Neither stimulation of AHN alone, nor exercise, in the absence of increased AHN, ameliorated cognition.

Each surveyed nuclear medicine department had to complete 2 forms: the first, about the administered activity in selected nuclear medicine studies, and the second, about the CT parameters used in SPECT/CT imaging, if available. The administered activities were converted into effective doses using the most recent conversion factors.

Organoids have been established from several organs, such as the intestine, prostate, brain, liver, kidney and pancreas. With recent advances in high-throughput and -omics profiling technologies, it is now possible to study the mechanisms of cellular organisation at the systems level.

Although this barrier is functionally important along the entire gut, specific regional regulatory mechanisms involved in the maintenance of this barrier are poorly defined.
