Nanoscale materials tend to have a single crystal domain, leading to not only size dependence but also orientation dependence of their mechanical properties. Recently, we developed a microscopic nanomechanical measurement method (MNMM), which enabled us to obtain equivalent spring constants (force gradients) of nanocontacts (NCs) while observing their atomic structures by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Therein, we evaluated Young's modulus based on a model that a newly introduced layer at the thinnest section of a NC determined the change in the measured equivalent spring constant, and discussed their size dependence.

The combination or sequential use of systemic therapies, such as lenvatinib and locoregional therapies, can improve the curability rate of hepatocellular carcinoma. This is based on the notion that lenvatinib remodels abnormal tumor vessels into normal vessels, potentially enhancing the efficacy of locoregional therapies. A novel method was devised for regioselective ring expansion of Meldrum's acid-derived spirocyclopropanes to spirocyclobutanes with stabilized sulfonium ylides, affording 1,2--disubstituted 6,8-dioxaspiro[3.5]nonane-5,9-diones in up to 87% yields without the formation of any isomers. The aforementioned reaction was also applied to the barbituric acid-derived spirocyclopropane, resulting in the formation of the corresponding cyclobutanes.
