Objective: To compare fibromyalgia (FM) characteristics among patients identified in a community-based chronic pain cohort based on traditional International Classification of Diagnoses 9th revision (ICD-9) diagnostic coding, with that of patients identified using a novel predictive model.

Methods: This retrospective study used data collected from July 1999 to February 17, 2015, in multiple chronic pain clinics in the United States. Patients were assigned to the FM case group based on specific inclusion criteria using ICD-9 codes or, separately, from results of a novel FM predictive model that was developed using random forest and logistic regression techniques.

Objectives: Clinical guidelines for the use of opioids in chronic noncancer pain recommend assessing risk for aberrant drug-related behaviors prior to initiating opioid therapy. Despite recent dramatic increases in prescription opioid misuse and abuse, use of screening tools by clinicians continues to be underutilized. This research evaluated natural language processing (NLP) together with other data extraction techniques for risk assessment of patients considered for opioid therapy as a means of predicting opioid abuse.

The ranavirus epizootic hematopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV) is endemic to Australia and is listed by the Office International des Epizooties. Clinical outbreaks have only been observed in wild populations of Redfin Perch Perca fluviatilis (also known as Eurasian Perch) and farmed populations of Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. The initial outbreaks of EHNV describe all age-classes of Redfin Perch as being susceptible and can lead to epidemic fish kills.

Physically castrated (PC) barrows were castrated at 2 d of age; immunologically castrated (IC) barrows were administered Improvest (GnRF analog diphtheria toxoid conjugate; Zoetis, Kalamazoo, MI) at 16 and 20 wk of age. The ranavirus, epizootic hematopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV), is endemic to southern Australia with natural outbreaks resulting in mass mortality events in wild Redfin Perch Perca fluviatilis (also known as Eurasian Perch) and less severe disease in farmed Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. To further investigate the host range for EHNV, 12 ecologically or economically important freshwater fish species from southeastern Australia were exposed experimentally to the virus. A bath-challenge model at 18 ± 3°C was employed with limited use of intraperitoneal inoculation to determine if a species was likely to be susceptible to EHNV.

Although recent reports have implied the ability of certain antidepressants and mood stabilizers to modulate epigenetic parameters, studies comparing the actions of these compounds under the same conditions are lacking. Study Objectives: Recent American Thoracic Society guidelines recommend two different methods of methacholine challenge testing: the 2-min tidal breathing method with twofold increases in concentration, and the five-breath dosimeter method with fourfold increases. Since the tidal breathing method delivers more methacholine to the mouthpiece, we hypothesized that the provocative concentration of methacholine required to decrease FEV(1) by 20% (PC(20)) would be lower than with the dosimeter method.

Design: Twelve subjects 18 to 45 years old with stable asthma were selected on the basis of a screening PC(20) (by tidal breathing) of < 1 mg/mL, 1 to 4 mg/mL, or 4 to 16 mg/mL (4 subjects in each concentration range).

Some clinicians advocate using metered-dose inhaler (MDI) spacers prepared from common household bottles. We evaluated the in vitro aerosol characteristics of fluticasone from the MDI alone and through spacers fashioned from 237-, 500-, 1000-, and 1500-mL polyethylene terephlate plastic cold drink bottles using a cascade impactor. Bronchospasm precipitated by exercise is often indistinguishable from bronchospasm produced by other stimuli. Symptoms result from airflow limitation and include wheezing, cough, chest tightness, dyspnea and sometimes hypoxemia. The prevalence of exercise-induced bronchospasm varies from 30%-90%, but virtually all patients with current asthma will experience a decrease in lung function if the exercise is sufficiently vigorous, especially in cold, dry environmental conditions.
