Article Synopsis
  • A new family called Urolibellulidae has been established for a newly identified genus and species, Urolibellula eocenica, which is based on a fossil dragonfly found in the Eocene Green River Formation in the USA.
  • This new family is considered to be closely related to the existing family Libellulidae and is seen as its sister group.
  • Since the oldest known libellulid dragonfly dates back to the Turonian period, it suggests that the Urolibellulidae must also date back to at least the Late Cretaceous period.
