Background: Various explicit screening tools, developed mostly in central Europe and the USA, assist clinicians in optimizing medication use for older adults. The Turkish Inappropriate Medication use in oldEr adults (TIME) criteria set, primarily based on the STOPP/START criteria set, is a current explicit tool originally developed for Eastern Europe and subsequently validated for broader use in Central European settings. Reviewed every three months to align with the latest scientific literature, it is one of the most up-to-date tools available.

Background: Patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) are at a higher risk of developing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Pneumococcal carriage studies are helpful tools for detecting potentially infectious serotypes and guiding immunization efforts. Pneumococcal nasopharyngeal colonization is common, and IPD can easily occur in an immunosuppressed state.

Hypertension is an increasing disease in children and the risk of endothelial damage and target organ damage increases in the presence of additional risk factors such as obesity. In our study, the effect of hypertension on early atherosclerotic changes and target organ damage in children was investigated. Twenty four-hour ambulatory pulse wave analysis was performed by oscillometric method in 71 children aged 8-18 years, 17 of whom were diagnosed with primary hypertension without obesity, 18 had both primary hypertension and obesity, and 16 had renal hypertension.

Background: Heterozygous intragenic mutations of the hepatocyte nuclear factor 1 homeobox b gene (HNF1B) located on chromosome 17 and microdeletion of 17q12 region (17q12MD) leads to the complete loss of this gene, which causes renal cystic disease, diabetes mellitus (MODY5), hypomagnesemia, hyperuricemia, liver enzyme abnormalities, genital tract abnormalities and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. In addition, patients with 17q12MD also have facial dysmorphism, neuro-developmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Case: A 16-year-old girl with obesity and mild facial dysmorphism was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of diabetes that started two days prior to her admission.

Objectives: There are studies on associations between obesity and mortality in nursing home (NH) residents, but the presence of concomitant muscle weakness has not been examined. We considered that self-reported weakness might be a low muscle strength proxy marker. We aimed to examine associations of obesity alone, self-reported muscle weakness alone, and their combination with mortality in NH residents.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 25 genetically confirmed cases of PLCε1-related kidney disease to explore the clinical spectrum, genotype-phenotype correlations, and treatment impacts on kidney outcomes.
  • 36% of patients presented with isolated proteinuria, while others had nephrotic syndrome or chronic kidney disease, with significant variations in histopathology results among those biopsied.
  • The findings suggest that while genetic variations do not correlate with clinical presentations, the type of kidney condition and histological features significantly influence prognosis and treatment responses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between low blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) caused by antihypertensive medications and mortality rates among nursing home residents aged 60 and older.
  • The research, conducted over a median follow-up of about 15 months for short-term and 40 months for long-term mortality, found that 34.8% of residents had low systolic blood pressure (≤110 mm Hg) and 15.8% had low diastolic blood pressure (≤65 mm Hg).
  • Results indicated that both low SBP and low DBP were significantly associated with higher mortality risks over both follow-up periods, even after accounting for factors like age, mobility status, and overall health. *

Sarcopenia is defined as a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder that is associated with an increased likelihood of adverse outcomes, including mobility problems and mortality. To reach a global consensus for its standard definition and diagnosis, more recently, a revised EWGSOP consensus (EWGSOP2) has been published. In EWGSOP2 definition, sarcopenia has been regarded as skeletal muscle failure and low muscle strength has been put forward as its key defining characteristics.
