MAC PD is diagnosed by fulfilling all of the following: presence of respiratory symptoms, imaging studies compatible with pulmonary disease, and isolation of the mycobacterium from either sputum or bronchial wash in symptomatic patients (isolation of at least two sputum specimens or at least one bronchial wash specimen).
