Background: Asian Indians are susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes at a lower age and often consume diets that are high in glycemic load and low in healthy fats.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 30 g prebreakfast and 30 g predinner supplementation of pistachios for 12 wk on glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), other glycemic markers, anthropometry, and lipid profile of Asian Indians with prediabetes.

Methods: In a 12-wk parallel arm, randomized controlled trial, we recruited 120 participants with prediabetes based on American Diabetes Association criteria.

New cytotoxic spatane diterpenoids from marine alga Stoechospermum marginatum.

Three new spatane diterpenoids (1-3) were isolated from the brown alga Stoechospermum marginatum together with three known compounds (4-6). The structures of these compounds were determined by the detailed NMR spectroscopic and Mass spectrometric analyses. All the isolated compounds were screened for their cytotoxic potentials against a panel of four human cancer cell lines, which include DU145 (Prostate), B16F10 (Melanoma), MDA MB-231 (Breast), and HeLa (Cervical) along with a normal cell line (HEK).

In connection with our continuous efforts in the synthesis of derivatives from major compounds isolated from traditional medicinal plants, in the present study we have attempted to synthesize the furan-conjugated aloe-emodin derivatives () using a three-component reaction. The synthesized derivatives were assessed for anticancer activity against five different cancer cell lines using the MTT assay and the results showed that most of the derivatives are potent against cancer cells comparing with the control. Caregiver assisted home-based cognitive remediation for individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia: A pilot study.

Cognitive deficits in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia are ubiquitous and, therefore, cognitive remediation is considered one of the prime targets of a comprehensive intervention program for schizophrenia. However, cognitive remediation is a resource consuming intervention and in lower and middle-income countries (LAMIC) such interventions are often neglected due to the resource constraints of the mental health services set-ups. Therefore, it is imperative to develop cognitive remediation programs that are less resource consuming for the mental health service delivery system.

Observational study of aggressive behaviour and coercion on an Indian acute ward.

Objective: We evaluated prevalence of aggressive behaviour and coercive measures on an acute Indian psychiatric ward where relatives are always present at the ward.

Method: Non-interacting, independent observers (specifically trained mental health clinicians) on an Indian acute, 20-bedded psychiatric ward gave structured reports on all violent episodes and coercive measures during a 30-day period. They used the Staff Observation Aggression Scale -Revised, Indian (SOAS-RI).

Retinoic acid and glycolic acid combination in the treatment of acne scars.

Introduction: Acne is a prevalent condition in society affecting nearly 80-90% of adolescents often resulting in secondary damage in the form of scarring. Retinoic acid (RA) is said to improve acne scars and reduce postinflammatory hyperpigmentation while glycolic acid (GA) is known for its keratolytic properties and its ability to reduce atrophic acne scars. There are studies exploring the combined effect of retinaldehyde and GA combination with positive results while the efficacy of retinoic acid and GA (RAGA) combination remains unexplored.

The Distribution of Genotype and Allelic Frequency of IL28B Gene Polymorphism in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Background: The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of IL28B gene on chromosome 19, encoding for the interferon (IFN)-λ-3 is strongly associated with treatment response to pegylated-IFN and ribavirin in patients infected with different genotypes of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Difference between ethnicity and treatment response rates suggesting a key role of host genetics. The IL28B polymorphism (rs12979860C/T) shows a marked differential distribution between racial groups.

About one in five people with multiple myeloma produce only light chains. Patients with lambda light chain disease have a three times worse prognosis than kappa light chain disease. We report a case of lambda light chain deposition disease in a 35-year-old female who presented with acute renal failure requiring hemodialysis.
