In vitro correlation of the level of inferior alveolar canal with CBCT imaging.

Purpose: The aim was to correlate the level of the inferior alveolar canal on cadaver specimens and as evaluated with three-dimensional radiographic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging.

Methods: Twenty-one skulls with intact mandibles (42 inferior alveolar canals) were imaged with an I-CAT Cone-Beam 3D Imaging System and multi-planar reformatted images obtained were scored to assess the level of the canal (Level I, Level II, and Level III). The mandibles were later dissected and level of the canal was directly visualized, scored, and further correlated with results from CBCT imaging.

Novel CBCT and optical scanner-based implant treatment planning using a stereolithographic surgical guide: a multipronged diagnostic approach.

This report describes the use of the combination of 2 technologies (Cone-beam computed tomography and Optical 3-dimensional scan) to maximize accuracy of implant placement in an area where previous implants failed and had to be removed. This report also stresses the increased efficiency of combining technologies to fabricate stereolithographic surgical guide which, when used intraoperatively, can improve precision of placement.

Hypopharyngeal lipoma causing obstructive sleep apnea: Discovery on dental cone-beam CT.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is primarily used for a variety of dental purposes, but it may also yield nondental findings that can have significant implications for patient health. For example, physicians should be aware that CBCT can identify some of the etiopathogenic causes of obstructive sleep apnea, as occurred in the case described in this report. The patient was a 76-year-old man who presented to a dentist for implant therapy.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign condition that usually affects the larger diarthroidal joints of the axial skeleton. Approximately 120 cases of synovial chondromatosis involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) have been reported. People with this condition may present with swelling, pain, intracapsular sounds and limitation of mandibular movement.
