A significant consequence of climate change is the rising incidence of wildfires. When wildfires occur close to wine grape (Vitis vinifera) production areas, smoke-derived volatile phenolic compounds can be taken up by the grape berries, negatively affecting the flavor and aroma profile of the resulting wine and compromising the production value of entire vineyards. Evidence for the permeation of smoke-associated compounds into grape berries has been provided through metabolomics; however, the basis for grapevines' response to smoke at the gene expression level has not been investigated in detail.

An "omics"-style approach was used to evaluate the complex relationship between whisky aroma and dilution with water, typically suggested as a way to better appreciate whisky. A set of 25 samples, including Bourbons, ryes, single-malt and blended Scotches, and Irish whiskies were chemically profiled at six dilution levels (100, 90, 80, 70, 60, and 50% whisky/water), while a subset of six whiskies (three Bourbons, three Scotches) at four dilution levels (100, 80, 60, and 40% whisky/water) were chemically profiled and subjected to sensory analysis by a trained panel ( = 20). Untargeted volatile analysis was performed using headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and sensory analysis was performed using descriptive analysis (DA).

A novel method for the determination of "true" free sulfur dioxide (SO) in wine and cider was developed using capillary electrophoresis with direct ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric detection (CE-UV/vis). Free SO was measured in model solutions with different SO-binding agents present (α-ketoglutarate, pyruvate, acetaldehyde, glucose, fructose, and malvidin-3-glucoside) as well as a variety of white and red wines and ciders. The CE method was compared to three conventional methods for measuring free SO, the Ripper method, Aeration-Oxidation (AO), and pararosaniline by discrete analyzer (DA).

Dengue is a serious infectious disease threat in Vietnam, but its spatiotemporal and socioeconomic risk factors are not currently well understood at the province level across the country and on a multiannual scale. We explore spatial trends, clusters and outliers in dengue case counts at the province level from 2011-2015 and use this to extract spatiotemporal variables for regression analysis of the association between dengue case counts and selected spatiotemporal and socioeconomic variables from 2013-2015. Dengue in Vietnam follows anticipated spatial trends, with a potential two-year cycle of high-high clusters in some southern provinces.

Hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) is a rare type of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), grouped under the mature or peripheral T-cell lymphomas. It is characterised by extranodal infiltration and proliferation of malignant T-cells within the sinusoids of the liver, sinuses and red pulp of the spleen, and the bone marrow. The tumour cells express CD2 and CD3, but are CD4, CD5 and CD8 negative and express a clonally restricted gamma-delta (or less commonly alpha-beta) T-cell receptor.

Background: Medical workers can be exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation from various sources. The potential cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation exposure have been derived from cohort studies of Japanese atomic bomb survivors who had experienced acute, high-level exposure. Since such extrapolations are subject to uncertainty, direct information is needed on the risk associated with chronic low-dose occupational exposure to ionizing radiation.

Objectives: The purpose of our study was to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in a Canadian cohort of 337 397 individuals (169 256 men and 168 141 women) occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation and included in the National Dose Registry (NDR) of Canada.

Material And Methods: Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation, such as those received during radiotherapy, leads to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. The emerging evidence of excess risk of CVDs after exposure to doses well below those previously considered as safe warrants epidemiological studies of populations exposed to low levels of ionizing radiation.

The role of physical anthropology in precollegiate education has been limited, but has the potential to play a vital and integral role in promoting students' understanding of themselves and others. This study describes the development, implementation, and results of a program constructed on an inquiry-based learning model that introduces middle and high school students to the content of physical anthropology. Demonstrated student learning indicates that intermediate and secondary students are capable of acquiring and applying complex content about human evolution and diversity.

Over the past 9 months, three cases of primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma have been treated at British Columbia Children's Hospital. Two patients (aged 24 and 37 months) presented with spontaneous pneumothoraces and had cystic changes in the affected lung on chest radiograph. The third patient (aged 42 months) was evaluated for chronic cough, fever, and failure to thrive.

Myocardial oedema may contribute to the impaired myocardial performance which commonly follows open heart surgery with cardioplegia-induced cardiac arrest. The rate of oedema formation during crystalloid cardioplegia and the relation of this to changes in ventricular compliance and ventricular function following reperfusion were studied using an isolated rabbit heart preparation. Myocardial tissue water content increased during cardioplegic arrest and the water content prior to reperfusion demonstrated an inverse correlation with ventricular function after reperfusion.

The influence of echocardiography on pre-operative cardiac catheterization was assessed in a retrospective analysis comparing two 12-month periods. Of 245 operations in 1983, 200 (82%) had pre-operative cardiac catheterization when two-dimensional echocardiography only was used in the pre-operative assessment compared to 162 of 238 (68%) operations in July 1985-June 1986 when pulsed Doppler echocardiography also was used (P less than 0.001).
