Background: Three percent of pregnancies are complicated by congenital anomalies. Prenatal integration of pediatric palliative care (PPC) may be hindered by non-standardized PPC referral processes. Pediatric palliative care, including end-of-life care, remains a relatively new area of interdisciplinary clinical practice and research. Improving the multifaceted and complex care of children and their families involves research that (1) documents the experiences of children with serious illness, their families, and clinicians; (2) evaluates relationships between contextual factors and health outcomes; and (3) establishes a stronger foundation for child- and family-focused interventions to improve care. Partnership among stakeholders in family-focused research begins from design through conduct of the study.

Purpose Of Review: To summarize pediatric palliative care (PPC) research from 2016 to 2021 as it intersects with pediatric oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).

Recent Findings: Children and adolescents with cancer who receive PPC have improved quality of life (QOL), symptom burden, advance care planning discussions, rates of hospice enrollment, home deaths, and receive less intensive therapy at the end-of-life (EOL). Parents report improved QOL and preparation for EOL.
