Pastoralists and national parks are key stakeholders in the management and conservation of natural and protected habitats. In Ethiopia, Afar pastoralists migrate seasonally with their livestock in search for grazing and water areas. Livestock are also a source of infectious diseases that can spread into wildlife populations when pastoralists encroach into unfenced national parks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the limited knowledge on zoonotic diseases, specifically anthrax and brucellosis, among pastoral communities in Ethiopia, focusing on factors that contribute to this knowledge gap.
  • Data was collected through questionnaire surveys involving 509 pastoralists and 51 healthcare providers, revealing that while awareness of these diseases exists, understanding of symptoms and preventive measures is low, particularly among women and healthcare providers.
  • Despite some knowledge, pastoralists continue risky practices with animals, and both groups identified challenges such as lack of vaccine access and effective management protocols for zoonotic diseases.

Objective: Mobile pastoralists are one of the last populations to be reached by health services and are frequently missed by health campaigns. Since health interventions among pastoralists have been staged across a range of disciplines but have not yet been systematically characterised, we set out to fill this gap.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, CINAL, Web of Science, WHO Catalog, AGRICOLA, CABI, ScIELO, Google Scholar and grey literature repositories to identify records that described health interventions, facilitators and barriers to intervention success, and factors influencing healthcare utilisation among mobile pastoralists.
