Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is the asymptomatic precursor of multiple myeloma and related diseases but has also been associated with thrombosis. Prior studies have not been based on screened cohorts leading to bias. We assessed the risk of thrombosis in a cohort of 75 422 individuals over 40 years old who were screened for MGUS in Iceland.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHypercalcemia in monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) presents a clinical challenge since it may indicate progression to multiple myeloma (MM) but could also be due to a multitude of unrelated disorders. To inform the approach to this clinical challenge, we conducted a nested cohort study within the iStopMM screening study. Of the 75,422 Icelanders aged 40 years and above who underwent screening for MGUS, we included 2,546 with MGUS who were in active follow-up, including regular serum calcium measurements.

The exploration of the root structure of coupled cluster (CC) equations holds both foundational and practical significance for computational quantum chemistry. This study provides insight into the intricate root structures of these nonlinear equations at both the CCD and CCSD level of theory. We utilize computational techniques from algebraic geometry, specifically the monodromy and parametric homotopy continuation methods, to calculate the full solution set.

Metabolic syndrome is recognized as one of the risk factors for pre-eclampsia. A recent study revealed a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly amongst Emirati women compared with global estimates.

This, coupled with shifting age demographics in MM, necessitates an updated assessment of infection risks in MM patients compared to the general population. Using Swedish population-based registries, we investigated the incidence of infections in 8,672 Swedish symptomatic MM patients diagnosed 2008-2021 and 34,561 matched controls.

In previous registry-based, retrospective studies, autoimmune diseases have been associated with MGUS. However, these studies were not based on a screened population and are therefore prone to ascertainment bias.

Elite cultivars are tetraploid and highly heterozygous but also share many common ancestors and generation-spanning inbreeding events, resulting from the clonal propagation of potatoes through seed potatoes. Consequentially, many SNP markers are not in a 1:1 relationship with a single allele variant but shared over several alleles that might exert varying effects on a given trait.

If this is true, prior cancer should be associated with a higher prevalence or increased progression rate of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), the precursor of MM and related disorders. Those with a history of cancer might therefore constitute a target population for MGUS screening.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is an asymptomatic precursor condition that precedes multiple myeloma and related disorders but has also been associated with other medical conditions. Since systematic screening is not recommended, MGUS is typically diagnosed due to underlying diseases and most cases are not diagnosed. Most previous studies on MGUS disease associations have been based on clinical cohorts, possibly resulting in selection bias.

Yet, ecophysiological studies on arctic insects typically focus on the ability of species to tolerate low temperatures, whereas studies investigating physiological adaptations of species to periodically warm and variable temperatures are few. In this study, we investigated temporal changes in thermal tolerances and the transcriptome in the Greenlandic seed bug Nysius groenlandicus, collected in the field across different times and temperatures in Southern Greenland.

Patients And Methods: Information regarding modifiable risk factors (anemia, diabetes, obesity, nutritional status, smoking, physical activity) was prospectively gathered in patients undergoing primary TJA of hip or knee in 2018-2020 at a single institution with 6 weeks' follow-up time.
Results: 738 patients (median age 68 years [IQR 61-73], women 57%) underwent TJA (knee 64%, hip 36%).
Revaccination against tetanus and diphtheria after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is usually effective, but the duration of the immunity is unknown. We conducted this study to evaluate humoral immunity to tetanus and diphtheria in long-term survivors and to provide knowledge regarding the need for boosters. The median time from HCT to blood sampling was 14 years (range, 8 to 40 years).

Patients aged ≥75 years at diagnosis constitute an increasing proportion of all MM patients, but are underrepresented in randomized clinical trials. There is an urgent need for studies of the characteristics, treatment and outcome in this cohort.

Serum free light chain (FLC) concentration is greatly affected by kidney function. Using a large prospective population-based cohort, we aimed to establish a reference interval for FLCs in persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). A total of 75422 participants of the iStopMM study were screened with serum FLC, serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation.

We compared the predictive performance of an artificial neural network to traditional pharmacometric modeling for population prediction of plasma concentrations of valproate in real-world data. We included individuals aged 65 years or older with epilepsy who redeemed their first prescription of valproate after the diagnosis of epilepsy and had at least one valproate plasma concentration measured. A long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) was developed using the training data set to fit the LSTM and the test data set to validate the model.

Introduction: Endometriosis is a painful, chronic inflammatory disorder that is difficult to treat. Studies have suggested that diet may have a therapeutic effect on chronic inflammation. However, only limited information is available regarding the impact of diet on pain perception in relation to endometriosis.

Material And Methods: All patients diagnosed with genitourinary cancer, breast cancer or metastatic malignant melanoma in 2007-2018 were matched with a database containing laboratory results for all major hospitals in Iceland.
Aim: To provide insight into the contribution of nursing to the establishment and running of a hospital-based outpatient clinic for COVID-19 infected patients, and thereby to inform the development of similar nursing care and healthcare more generally.
Design: Qualitative descriptive study centred on collaboration between nurse managers and researchers.
Methods: Drawing on Donabedian's model of quality health services and the work of Allen on "Nurses' organising work", data were collected using four semi-structured, audio-recorded, focus group interviews with five nurse managers.
In pharmacoepidemiology, it is usually expected that the observed association should be directly or indirectly related to the pharmacological effects of the drug/s under investigation. Pharmacological effects are, in turn, strongly connected to the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of a drug, which can be characterized and investigated using pharmacometric models. Recently, the use of pharmacometrics has been proposed to provide pharmacological substantiation of pharmacoepidemiological findings derived from real-world data.

In the CARD study (NCT02485691), cabazitaxel significantly improved radiographic progression-free survival (rPFS) and OS versus abiraterone or enzalutamide in patients with mCRPC previously treated with docetaxel and the alternative androgen-receptor-targeted agent (ARTA). Here, we investigated NLR as a biomarker.
