Introduction: There are numerous studies of the prevalence of migraine and very varied findings. Amongst the many reasons for this would seem to be the use of questionnaires for screening populations, absent or incorrect validation of these questionnaires and the use of impracticable diagnostic criteria.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of migraine in a homogeneous population using the self-questionnaire 'Alcoi 1995' which had previously been validated for the diagnosis of migraine.

Introduction: In epidemiological investigation valid, reliable means of diagnosing the illnesses studies are essential.

Objective: To validate the self-questionnaire 'Alcoi 1995' for the diagnosis of migraine.

Methods: We used the questionnaire Alcoi-1992 (which had been validated previously) to find the prevalence of migraine in homogeneous populations.

The appearance of the new lecture systems for the manometry studies by computer, like the Polygram by Synectics (vector volume), offer the possibility to see the circumferential pressure forces, that even in rest conditions as in voluntary contraction, they keep coaptation of the anal canal, and this will act as a continent closure system in the most distal part of the G.I. tract.

Video-assisted endoscopic techniques have decreased the surgical aggression in abdominal and thoracic surgery. In our country, pediatric laparoscopy has been developing slowly, but this is not the case for thoracoscopy. The aim of this paper is to present the techniques and results of thoracoscopy pulmonary biopsy in our first patients.

The authors show their experience in the use of the laparoscopic approach in 18 cases of unilateral exploratory anorchia. They highlight the advantages that this method offers in efficiency, speed, security and minimal aggression compared with conventional exploration of the inguinal channel in the search of the undetectable testis. In the 18 cases studied through the insertion of 5 mm lense in the umbilical area, it was established that a testicular hypoplasia was present in 8 cases.

Two PCR typing methods, based on polymorphism of the insertion sequence IS6110, were compared with Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains by using a single primer complementary to the inverted repeats of IS6110. Total M. tuberculosis DNA either was amplified directly (IS6110-PCR) or was amplified following digestion and ligation (IS6110-inverse-PCR).

The fungal population on dry-cured Iberian ham can be essential to the development of the product's unique characteristics, but health hazards due to mycotoxins may be significant. We examined the natural fungal population of Iberian hams during ripening at three different locations. Chloroform extracts from 59 selected isolates were tested for toxicity to brine shrimp larvae and VERO cells, for mutagenicity in the Ames test and for antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

Objective: Nowadays, quality of life is considered to be important both in clinical investigation and patient care. Migraine is a particularly disabling illness, with a pronounced effect on general health and on the ability to take part in social activities. We review the instruments used for measuring quality of life and the published studies in which the relationship between migraine and quality of life is analyzed.

Iberian ham is an uncooked, cured meat product ripened under natural uncontrolled conditions for 18 to 24 months. Gram-positive, catalase-positive cocci are the main microbial population in Iberian ham for most of the ripening time. Since some of these organisms are able to produce enterotoxins, adequate characterization and toxicological study are needed.

Introduction: The importance of cerebrovascular pathology demands the most exact and complete diagnosis possible, by general physical and neurological examination and complementary techniques including computerized tomography (CT). Without CT, diagnosis may be delayed, for which reason such authors as Allen have put forward scales which by means of diagnostic scoring distinguish between stroke types.

Aim: To validate the Allen scale as opposed to CT scan in a series of patients suffering from haemorrhagic and ischaemic stroke.

The relationship between the superficial yeast population and the ripening conditions of Iberian dry cured hams has been studied for three different locations. Tentative identifications were carried out for 836 isolates. Candida zeylanoides was the dominating yeast in early stages, whereas more than 99% of isolates from the surface of matured hams were identified as Debaryomyces hansenii.

A group of medical students were interviewed using the 'Alcoi 1992' questionnaire based on the diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS) in order to assess the prevalence and various characteristics of migraine. This questionnaire for headache diagnosis was approved in 1993, showing both high sensitivity and exactness in diagnosing migraine. Sensitivity, exactness, predictive value and agreement index of the questionnaire in migraine diagnosis were 100%, 94%, 90% (positive) or 100% (negative) and 0.

A group of universities not related with health sciences were interviewed using the questionnaire 'Alcoi 1992', based on the operational diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS), to evaluate the prevalence of migraine. This questionnaire for the diagnosis of migraine was validated in 1993, showing a high sensibility and specificity for the diagnosis of migraine. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive value and chance-corrected agreement rate for the diagnosis of migraine was 100%, 94%, 90% (PVpos), 1008 (PVneg) and 0.

Stress is the precipitating factor in migraine which is most commonly recognized by patients. There are many affected who describe headaches brought on by stressful situations and events, although they also speak of the onset of their attacks during the period of calm immediately after such moments of stress. There are however few objective works in the literature which study the relationship between stress and migraine.

Migraine is a paroxysmic abnormality in which asymtomatic periods alternate with the appearance of attacks. Such attacks are the end result of a chain of events leading on to the acute clinical syndrome. Amongst those phenomena which occur in the days prior to the attack starting, the factors which bring such attacks on have been widely studied by a great number of researchers.

Knowing the epidemiology of migraine is important for a host of reasons. Migraine is one of the most prevalent types of headache. In addition, it constitutes a pathology which due to its cyclic, recurring and highly incapacitating characteristics has enormous repercussions on the quality of life of those affected; it is responsible for the loss of an important number of working days and of production; responsible too for the vast consumption of medicaments and consequently represents a considerable economic cost.

Migraine headache is a common, recurrent and often incapacitating disorder resulting in a substantial loss of work days and productivity, significant consumption of medicines, and considerable economic cost. We performed this study in order to determine the characteristic features of migrainous patients with regular or frequent intake of ergotamine preparations and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the existence of significant differences between both groups. 186 patients were included in the study, 36.

Throughout the many studies carried out on patients suffering from migraine, we find that a series of diseases or abnormalities with cardiovascular etiologies may be associated with the risk of migraine. In some studies published so far there is a greater prevalence of distinct cardiovascular diseases among those patients suffering from migraine. The shortage of case-control studies which might otherwise definitely establish a relationship between migraine and other cardiovascular diseases leads us to cautiously interpret the meaning of these associations.

We present our follow-up protocol of congenital megaureter (PCM) diagnosed early thanks to showing prenatal ultrasound the dilatation in the urinary system. 47 PCM were studied retrospectively in 35 babies, out of 240 cases of prenatal renal dilatation, from 1984 to 1993. The final diagnosis was established with the early use of ultrasound, cystography, intravenous urography (IVU) and isotope test.

The Iberian dry cured ham is an uncooked meat product highly appreciated because of its characteristic flavour. This product is obtained from highly marbled Iberian pig hindlegs after 18-24 months of maturation under natural environmental conditions. The role of Micrococcaceae in the development of the aroma characteristics of this products remains unclear.

Since 1988, we have performed the Passerini-Glazel technique, in 5 patients, between 7 months and 3 years old. All showed female pseudohermaphroditism with severe signs of masculinization, and consequently, high outlet of the vagina in the urethra, secondary to Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). The technique use is to get a functional and esthetically acceptable vagina at the expense of a urethral flap and two flaps of skin, coming from the hypertrophic clitoris.
