Intracerebral grafting of dopamine containing adrenal chromaffin cells to the brain of experimental animals can ameliorate the symptoms of experimentally induced Parkinson's disease. Clinical trials of adrenal autograft to the patients with Parkinson's disease are on-going with variable results and autopsy cases show poor survivability of grafted chromaffin cells. The present study was performed to determine if transected peripheral nerve could provide sufficient nerve growth factor to enhance the survivability of grafted chromaffin cells.

Systemic injection of MPTP damages the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system in C57B1/6 mice. Since transected peripheral nerve segments are known to produce nerve growth factor, we performed adrenal medullary grafts or cografts of adrenal medulla and sciatic nerve into the striatum of MPTP-treated mice, and compared the survivability of grafted chromaffin cells and the recovery of intrinsic host dopaminergic fibers. Survivability of grafted chromaffin cells increased when cografts with sciatic nerve were made, and host dopaminergic fiber recovery was more prominent in mice with cografts than in mice with adrenal grafts alone.

The present study was performed to compare the immunosuppressive effect of FK-506 (FK) with cyclosporin A (CyA) in xenogeneic neural transplantation in rodents. The solid grafts of embryonic ventral mesencephalic tissue from 14-day rat embryos were transplanted into the right lateral ventricle of 20 mature male mice using a stereotactic approach, and the mice were sacrificed 14 days after transplantation. The removed brains, which were sectioned coronally, were stained with antibodies against glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), Lyt-2 or tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in addition to hematoxylin-eosin and Nissl stainings.

Recent studies have demonstrated that deprenyl can delay the progression of parkinsonian syndrome. Deprenyl selectively and irreversibly inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidase-type B (MAO-B), and subsequent enzyme activity requires de novo synthesis of MAO-B. In this study we investigated (1); the effects of deprenyl on striatal dopamine (DA) levels in MPTP-lesioned and undamaged mice and (2); the effect of deprenyl on L-DOPA induced rotational movements in a hemiparkinsonian model monkey.

After dividing 21 cats into three equal groups, we exposed their right middle cerebral arteries transorbitally and adventitially irrigated them with 2 ml washed red blood cells, blood plasma, or saline. To determine arterial intimal platelet accumulation in each cat, we injected [111In]oxine-labeled platelets intravenously immediately before injecting the various experimental solutions. Animals were sacrificed 2 or 4 hours following the injection of labeled platelets.

C57BL/6 mice show decreased dopaminergic fibers and dopamine concentration in the striatum following systemic injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). We have investigated the effect of adrenal medullary grafts into the striatum of young mice treated with MPTP. Enhanced recovery of the host nigrostriatal dopaminergic system was observed in those adrenal medullary grafted mice.

The magnetic resonance signal intensity and cyst content were analyzed in 2 new and 17 previously reported cases of Rathke cleft cyst. Lesions displaying hypointensity on T1-weighted images (T1WI) and hyperintensity on T2-weighted images (T2WI) contained CSF-like fluid. Cases showing hyperintensity on T1WI and isointensity on T2WI frequently contained mucoid material.

A radionuclide counting method, performed with the patient prone and the neck flexed, was used successfully to diagnose CSF rhinorrhea in two patients. A normal radionuclide ratio (radionuclide counts in pledget/radionuclide counts in 1-ml blood sample) was obtained in 11 normal control subjects. Significance was determined to be a ratio greater than 0.

The authors present a case of central neurocytoma in a 34-year-old female who had experienced intermittent headaches over a 10-year period. On computed tomographic (CT) scans and magnetic resonance images, the tumor appeared as a large, calcified mass occupying both lateral ventricles. A right parieto-occipital craniotomy was performed and the tumor was totally removed.

Antibodies to Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O3, O5, O6 and O9 were measured by the micro-agglutination method in 445 healthy subjects and patients with Grave's disease (n = 70), Hashimoto's disease (n = 45) and thyroid tumor (n = 29). In contrast to previous reports, the incidence of antibodies to serotype O3 in each group of patients with thyroid diseases was not significantly different from that in healthy subjects. However, the incidence of antibodies to serotype O5 was significantly higher in patients with Graves' disease (81.

The authors report two siblings, both of whom had unruptured cerebral aneurysms found by screening examination of noninvasive cerebral computed angiotomography. Other authors have reported unruptured cerebral aneurysms detected by conventional cerebral angiography in asymptomatic relatives of families in which two or more individuals had cerebral aneurysmal rupture. It is of interest that, in our cases, the unruptured cerebral aneurysms were detected by noninvasive cerebral computed angiography in two asymptomatic siblings in a family with no history of ruptured aneurysm.

Intracerebral hemorrhage from a brain tumor can mask the cause of bleeding, confuse the diagnosis, and affect the treatment and prognosis. This type of hemorrhage is generally regarded as a rapidly progressive, fulminating disease, sudden in onset, with the outcome being death or profound neurological deficits. Such hemorrhages are demonstrated by CT scan as intracerebral high density areas.

A case of craniopharyngioma confined within the third ventricle with necropsy is reported. A stalk-like structure in this tumour was present in the wall of the third ventricle at its base. It is suggested that this tumour might have arisen from the remnants of Rathke's pouch persisting in the tuber cinereum.
