In this study, we present electrically conducting self-standing graphite films consisting of lignin derivatives extracted by simultaneous enzymatic saccharification and comminution (SESC). Sonication of graphite powder in the presence of SESC lignin and pure water allows dispersion of the SESC-lignin-attached graphite without addition of other chemicals. The SESC-lignin-attached graphite having a diameter of several micrometers can be used as a surface electroconductive coating and molded into self-standing films by drying.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how a family history of diabetes affects blood sugar response, insulin secretion, and sensitivity in young Japanese individuals who normally maintain healthy glucose levels.
  • Researchers measured various health indicators, including plasma glucose and insulin levels during a glucose tolerance test, and used clustering analysis to categorize participants based on their glucose tolerance.
  • Findings revealed that those with a diabetic family history had worse glucose tolerance and insulin response during the test, highlighting the influence of genetic factors on metabolic health even among those with normal glucose levels.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to explore the relationship between arterial stiffness and levels of plasma glucose, insulin, and proinsulin during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in young Japanese individuals.
  • The researchers analyzed data from 1,193 subjects under 40 with normal glucose tolerance or mild hyperglycemia, measuring how these levels varied over time and comparing them based on arterial stiffness.
  • Results indicated that higher levels of insulin (IRI) and proinsulin were associated with greater arterial stiffness, with insulin's effects being more significant than those of proinsulin, suggesting that higher insulin responses may contribute to arterial stiffness rather than reduced insulin sensitivity.

Background: Colloidal saccharated iron oxide injection is used for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients with a poor oral intake. Because of the poor stability of the colloid particle, there have been concerns regarding its compatibility with various injections in clinical practice. To assess the stability of colloidal saccharated iron oxide in normal saline as a diluent, pharmaceutical stability analyses were conducted using various concentrations of glucose and sodium chloride (NaCl).

We previously reported that cisplatin potentiated ileal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) metabolism and caused pathological changes with an inflammatory response in the delayed phase (72 h) after administration to rats. In the present study, we further investigated the time-dependent effect of cisplatin on ileal 5-HT metabolism and the effects of combining cisplatin and anti-inflammatory drugs on ileal tryptophan hydroxylase expression and pica (the consumption of non-nutritive materials such as kaolin). Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression was significantly increased at 24 h after cisplatin (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) administration.

Background: In the clinical dentists and periodontal researchers' community, there is an obvious demand for a systems model capable of linking the clinical presentation of periodontitis to underlying molecular knowledge. A computer-readable representation of processes on disease development will give periodontal researchers opportunities to elucidate pathways and mechanisms of periodontitis. An ontology for periodontitis can be a model for integration of large variety of factors relating to a complex disease such as chronic inflammation in different organs accompanied by bone remodeling and immune system disorders, which has recently been referred to as osteoimmunology.
