The present study aimed to clarify the relationships between novel and traditional anthropometric indices and insulin sensitivity (SI) in young and middle-aged Japanese persons with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), and middle-aged Japanese persons with NGT and glucose intolerance. Plasma glucose and insulin levels were measured in 1270 young (age <40 years) and 2153 middle-aged persons with NGT ( = 1531) and glucose intolerance ( = 622) during a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Height (Ht), weight, and waist circumference (WC) were measured.

Electrically conducting films prepared from graphite and lignin in pure water.

In this study, we present electrically conducting self-standing graphite films consisting of lignin derivatives extracted by simultaneous enzymatic saccharification and comminution (SESC). Sonication of graphite powder in the presence of SESC lignin and pure water allows dispersion of the SESC-lignin-attached graphite without addition of other chemicals. The SESC-lignin-attached graphite having a diameter of several micrometers can be used as a surface electroconductive coating and molded into self-standing films by drying.

Five-Year Impacts of Antithrombotic Therapy Based on 10-Year Clinical Outcomes of Cypher™ Stent Implantation.

Introduction: Few researchers have investigated the optimal long-term antithrombotic therapy regimen, especially after first-generation drug-eluting stent (DES) use. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mid-term antithrombotic therapy on long-term outcomes in patients treated with the first sirolimus-eluting coronary stent (Cypher™).

Methods: Between 2004 and 2009, 1021 patients underwent Cypher™ implantation at our institute; among them, 567 patients had available data on antithrombotic therapy at year 5.

In this paper, we present nonflammable UV protective films consisting of clay minerals and lignin derivatives. The nonflammable transparent films were produced by mixing clay with a lignin derivative extracted from plants by simultaneous enzymatic saccharification and comminution. The preparation procedure did not require hazardous chemicals.

Background: Studies suggest that fragmented QRS (fQRS) can predict arrhythmic events in various cardiac diseases. However, the association between fQRS recordings on intracardiac electrogram (EGM) and ventricular arrhythmic events remains unknown.

Methods: We enrolled 51 patients (age, 62 ± 12 years; 40 men) with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and structural heart disease and evaluated surface electrocardiogram (ECG) and EGM measurement of fQRS and the association between fQRS and arrhythmic events.

However, the clinical characteristics of outflow tract ventricular tachycardias (OTVTs) after AVR are yet to be clarified. [A Case of Laparoscopic Ileocecal Resection for Ascending Colon Cancer with Portosystemic Shunt].

A 72-year-old woman who underwent colorectal endoscopy because of positive fecal occult blood test results was diagnosed with ascending colon cancer.Preoperative CT revealed advanced ascending colon cancer and portosystemic shunt between the ileocecal vein and inferior vena cava.It was necessary to cut the shunt when ileocecal resection was performed.

Cisplatin increases the number of enterochromaffin cells containing substance P in rat intestine.

We previously reported that cisplatin potentiated ileal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) metabolism and caused pathological changes with an inflammatory response in the delayed phase (72 h) after administration to rats. In the present study, we further investigated the time-dependent effect of cisplatin on ileal 5-HT metabolism and the effects of combining cisplatin and anti-inflammatory drugs on ileal tryptophan hydroxylase expression and pica (the consumption of non-nutritive materials such as kaolin). Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression was significantly increased at 24 h after cisplatin (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) administration.

[Surgical Therapy for Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancer].

We examined 40 cases of locally recurrent rectal cancer surgically treated at our hospital. The sites of recurrence were the anastomosis site(16 cases), pelvic lymph nodes(10 cases), pelvis(10 cases), and perineum(5 cases). Intraoperative complications were confirmed in 5% and postoperative complications in 45% of cases.
