Objective: Pilot a clinical model and study to learn more about how employment impacts health in children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Background: As young individuals transition into adulthood, milestones such as independent living and gainful employment become paramount. However, for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), these milestones can diverge notably from those of typically developing peers.
Purpose: Prior research indicates that the provision of assistive technology (AT) services positively predicts successful employment outcomes in vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs. While AT services can be promising, they are underutilized overall, and there are apparent disparities in AT service utilization. The purpose of this study was to identify sociodemographic factors which may act as barriers to receiving AT services in VR programs.

We used data from a national survey to assess the effects of these programs on the prescribing of opioid analgesics and other pain medications in ambulatory care settings at the point of care in twenty-four states from 2001 to 2010. We found that the implementation of a prescription drug monitoring program was associated with more than a 30 percent reduction in the rate of prescribing of Schedule II opioids.
