Depression as the first symptom in AIDS patient.

A patient experienced depression before being diagnosed as AIDS positive. He was well accepted by family members despite being aware about the infecttivity and fatality of the disease.

Rapid synthesis and introduction of a protected EDTA-like group during the solid-phase assembly of peptides.

A simple two-step procedure is reported for the synthesis of a tert-butyl ester protected form of an EDTA-like bifunctional chelating agent. This reagent can be easily introduced on any available amino group during the assembly of peptides on solid-phase supports. Using the model tetradecapeptide OVA(323-336), we have introduced an EDTA group at the N-terminus of this T-cell epitope and confirmed that the EDTA group is present on the molecule, can chelate metals, and does not affect the biological activity of the peptide.

The role of selective beta 1-blocker in the preoperative preparation of thyrotoxicosis: a comparative study with propranolol.

Subtotal thyroidectomy was performed for hyperthyroidism on 130 patients; 95 treated before surgery with propranolol (Group I) and 35 given only metoprolol before surgery (Group II). These patient groups were compared with reference to preoperative medication, operative and immediate postoperative course, and late results with follow-up for one to five years. Clinical response was 100% in group II and 94.

Evaluation Of-astemizole- A New H-1 Blocking Antihistamine in Urticaria.

An open trial of astemizole a new anthistamine on 30 patients, having urticaria revealed complete relief in 28 patients. The controlling daily dose was 10 mg in 17 patients, 20 mg in 7 and 30 mg in 4. Two patients did not improve even with 40 mg a day given for 7 days.

Phthalanilic acids as highly selective reagents for the amperometric determination of thorium(IV).

Th(IV) has been determined by amperometric titration at an applied emf of -1.0 V with ten phthalanilic acids. Of these, the 2,5-dichloro, 4-bromo, 3-nitro, 4-nitro and 1-naphthyl derivatives were found promising analytical reagents and most effective.

Serum lipids, platelets, and fibrinolytic activity in cerebrovascular disease.

Fifty patients with occlusive cerebrovascular disease (ischemic thrombotic cerebrovascular disease--ITCBVC) were studied for clinical features, angiographic findings, serum lipids, platelet functions and fibrinolytic activity. Angiograms were abnormal in 24 of 36 cases. Two-thirds of these had an abnormality of the internal carotid artery in the neck; one-third had occlusion of the middle and/or anterior cerebral arteries.
